Proud of my girls! They all figured out the ramp today. I had to clean their pen, and move it, so I let them free range in the entire backyard until sunset. When I went back out to put them in the coop, they were all already in there, and upstairs on their perches. Starting tomorrow they no...
That's funny. That's one of my wife's favorite shows. I named mine after the Golden Girls. Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia. Dorothy and Rose are Rhoadies and the other two are my goldens. Dorothy is my biggest bird at the moment, and also the most skittish. Rose is the smallest, and has...
Ooh. Good advice. Thank you. My curious chi hasn't been agressive, just curious. The ladies didn't seem threatened by her today, but I'll certainly make sure to watch closely. I'm so happy to have all this advice. You guys and gals are awesome.
Chris
My two kitties are inside cats. I'm not too worried about the dogs. Once my ladies are ready to free range, I think they'll put my Chihuahuas in their place. It'll be fun to watch. But I'll monitor closely for sure. Installed a treat cage thing for them today. They are so happy. Still come...
Well, is my theme for this group obvious enough?
Purdy birdies. I would love to do an Easter-egger next year! Gotta learn the basics first though. I put in one of those little snack cages for mine today. They are loving the sunflower seed cake . Also introduced them to my two teacup...
Thanks! I was actually perusing the wing-clipping article this morning. My girls would fly clean out of the brooder each time I lifted the lid. Not far, usually just to the rim. But far enough to have me concerned. Luckily, they are very tame and take a hand to sit on over anything else...
Too funny. I was doing the same today. Trying to coax them with treats and the like. My smallest bird, Rose, has it down pat. The others not so much. Good thing I sit and visit with them multiple times per day. They'll catch on. They were all slow to adapt to poultry cups as well, but...
Thats pretty cool. I like the repurpose aspect for sure. Like I said before, this is my first go, so I really appreciate the input from the egg-sperts here. Due to city rules, I can't have any more than 6, but I think 4 is fine with me. This year I'm going to let my coop/tractor hybrid ride...
Thanks for the input! They are only being confined as they get used to the coop. They have over 500 sq SQ feet for free range area that I didn't really show in the pictures. I'm just wanting them to learn their safe place before letting them loose. I've no intention to keep them locked in...
Hello from Whidbey Island. I'm new to BYC and new to chickens as well. Super fun so far! I just moved my chicks to their coop today. I've got two Golden Comets and two Rhodies that are about five weeks old. They've been in the new coop pretty much since noon, and I'm not sure they're...
Thanks you! It was an expandable brooder box design. One can start only using one third, then two thirds, and so on. There's a slat to block off what one needs. And for four chickens, it allows 6 sq feet until they are ready for the coop.
Hi all! My name is Chris and I'm trying my hand at backyard chickens for the first time. I have two Rhode Island Reds and two Gold Sexlink chicks almost ready to leave the brooder box. I'm an active duty navy guy almost to retirement and wanted to try a new hobby. I can't believe how much...
