Hatching Egg being Pecked by Broody Hen

I have a buff orphington hen who has gone broody. Out of curiosity I kept 10 eggs w her to incubate and put another 10 in my incubator. I noticed today one watch hatching. Later, though I saw her peck at it and pull off parts of shell. I was not sure if she was helping, if she knew this was...

    Pip then Die

I have had an issue with a number of baby chicks pipping but never succeeding in breaking out of the shell. Day 1 and 2 I see some small progress, but by day 3 the cheeping ominously stops. Is this an indicator of something I am doing wrong with the incubator/humidity levels/temp? Any insight is...

    Duckweed as a feed source

Thanks :) I'm really grateful that I do. My birds will literally chase me demanding to be fed if I go a day without putting some corn or layer feed. I don't want them hungry or nutrient deprived, but dont want to be spending $ just to feed a carb addiction.

    Hello World

I'm not sure. I got them as goslings free from a woman who said they had been an "impulse buy" and wanted to rehome them. I have them now with my ducks in a nice pond on the property. They may be embden (?)

    Hello World

I totally agree! They have really gentle personalities and are so trusting. We had a thunderstorm rip through the area on Monday and when I came out to check on them they came running up to me and wanted to stay near me for reassurance/protection.

    Hello World

I am new to this board and have a few years experience keeping chicken. I have a medium-sized flock of around 35 chickens and around 20 ducks and 2 geese. The chickens are primarily egg layers: golden comets, rhode island reds, barred rocks, a few bielefelders and 3 saipan jungle fowl. With...

    Trying to identify this Rooster

Hello - I picked up this rooster with a couple others from a woman who had too many. He is very gentle and the dominant bird in my flock. I THINK he might be a dorking, but wanted to see what you all thought.
