I'm really excited for you!!! This year we got four EEs and three Welsummers to add to our flock. The EEs have started laying but we are still waiting on our Wellies. How old are yours?
Congratulations! We got our first bantam egg yesterday from my little EE pullet. She is the first to lay an egg out of this year's chicks. A little blue-green egg! She is our only bantam pullet. beat out the big girls!
Our all white chick with green legs really had me stumped as to what breed, but then it grew in a muff and beard eventually so I'm thinking an all white EE. Our young bird has a comb similar to yours.
We have four EEs that are two weeks old now, I love their fuzzy cheeks! When at the feed store I looked for ones with slate colored legs, but none had them. To my surprise, they have all developed the slate colored legs now. I hope some of them lay blue eggs! Your little chicks are adorable
I wanted something easy that worked great, so...we have pine shavings in coop, deep litter. I add more shavings when needed and clean out 2-3 times a year.
Their run is sand, and it's covered so it stays dry-that way the poop dries and disappears. They also have an enclosed 'yard' attached...
I put mine in my compost bin, but I like the ideas of grinding them up and putting in a planting hole-I think I'll start doing that. Thanks for the idea.
just like baby humans, chicks don't stay little for long. So, I think that we should ooh and ahh over them while we can
And as for being on BYC-it's important research, so that we know how to care for our chickens properly who rely on us
Besides, what if one turns out to be a roo? Two just isn't enough. Last year I went to get four, ended up with eight.
We have a coop with an enclosed, predator proof run. The only time I close the door between the two is if I'm cleaning the coop. I can sleep in, go on vacation, or go to work...
It amazes me how fast they go from hatching out of an egg to flying up to the edge of their brooder! At ten days old we found one of our chicks on the top edge-no more leaving the lid open!
I would love to be able to let my dogs out when my hens are free ranging, but I know that they would attack them. I have Rhodesian Ridgebacks, they are sight and scent hounds and have a very strong prey drive. It would be unrealistic of me to expect them not to attack my birds. I know that...
Sometimes the people helping with the chicks at the feed store are knowledgeable-but, often they are not. When I stopped in and peeked at the chicks at one of our feed stores the other day, there was a bin marked 'Ameracauna Pullets'. I told the guy helping out that I really thought they were...
