    What's wrong with this chick?

Heres a couple pics that show size comparison. It's not super dramatic but I can definitely tell. Also, dont worry, that clearly not-predator-proof pen they are in is for daylight hours only on days that are hot enough to not need a heat lamp :) we tuck them in safely in the garage at night or...

    What's wrong with this chick?

I hatched it myself with eggs I got from 2 different local people from Facebook. So barnyard surprise. No bantams. Just growing a little more slowly than the others. I noticed pretty early that something looked a little "off" about this one's backside, but it's a bit more noticeable now so I...

    What's wrong with this chick?

This little guy is 2 weeks old. Active, eating, running around with the rest of the flock seeming normal, but the poor thing is noticeably smaller than the rest. Also, the bulge sticking out to the right side of its butt?! Any ideas what's wrong?

I can see the air cell without candling!

Heres my final hatch! Presumably. Got 1 more not internally pipped but still alive waiting on. 18 chicks and 3 ducklings. That red bulb sure messes up the lighting/color

I can see the air cell without candling!

One eager little duck pipped before lockdown! Found it Thursday night when I was intending to lockdown Friday morning. Waited about a full 24 hrs to hatch and came out perfect :) looks to be a pekin. I'm expectingperkins, rouens, and/or mixes of the 2. doing well, looks great this morning. One...

In happier news, I heard peeping from another egg :)

I can see the air cell without candling!

Locking down tomorrow. I candled again after turning. No more movement. I actually see a little more blood. I think it's a goner. Oh well. Theres a reason I always set more eggs than I ultimately want!

Bummer :/ I did see it moving this morning

I can see the air cell without candling!

Check out this duck egg! Its day 24, so almost lockdown, and it definitely didnt look like that last night. I'm sure that means internal pip, but anyone see anything like that before without even candling? I was curious so I candled and saw the duckling moving around, and confirmed internal pip...

    Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

oooh, i love the lake geneva area! First time I was out that way, I was thinking, "why weren't we looking at houses around here?" and then I realized, it probably WAS within our search radius, but for all the things we wanted in the house/land anything in that area was probably filtered out by...

    Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

oh, it'd be big enough to enter :) I like the look of this one on this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/the-hoop-coop-build.1224595/ I think I would want to have a little more wood on the sides, maybe about 3 feet up, then cattle panel, and corrugated roof instead of just a tarp...

    Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

is the concern not being able to keep warm enough, or snow damage? i would definitely *not* do a tarp roof, I'd go with something like this or similar https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/ondura-9-36-in-w-x-79-in-l-corrugated-asphalt-roofing-sheets-green-pack-of-5?cm_vc=-10005 which i'd...

    Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi, I'm new to WI! We just moved here over the summer and bought a house in Eagle. I've had chickens before (only for about a year or so) but I haven't gotten started here yet. We need to get a coop built (or bought, if we can snag a deal on craigslist) first. I'm trying to convince my husband...

day 22, no internal pip--malposition? (candling video)

If I made a tiny hole in the air cell to peek in on it, would that hurt it if no internal pip yet? I see movement that id describe as looking like the rise and fall of a chest from breathing... I guess it's hard to see in the video since it's shaky. I wrote x and o on opposite sides of the egg...

day 22, no internal pip--malposition? (candling video)

But I can see movement when candling did you see the video? So must be alive. It seems bizarre to be so late when the rest were early. But it's a still air incubator... I did try and move the eggs around to different sections regularly bit maybe this egg spent more time in cooler sections while...

day 22, no internal pip--malposition? (candling video)

I've had a bit of a wonky hatch this time around :/ they started hatching at day 19, and the last one was nearly 24 hours ago. i had to assist 2 chicks who were malpositioned, pipping outside the air cell and getting stuck. they definitely needed it. one was so ready, it was the easiest, most...

    Does this chick need help?

Next assist. Gah. This one was coming out the pointy end and got a little stuck to the membrane. I pretty much have all the shell off, but when I saw this bit of yellow over here, is it still absorbing the yolk? I put it in the incubator in a paper cup as opposed to messing with that membrane more

    Does this chick need help?

These are the only other eggs I see that have pipped. There could be others that aren't angled in such a way that they're visible. One is the one I mentioned that pipped at the pointy side last night, partial sideways zip towards center. Other one has a pip near center. So weird. Little bantam...
