Hi, I've done a lot of assisted hatching now & I would not recommend it in quail, as I've not had good luck trying it. The smaller eggs are just so much more fragile than chicken eggs & the tiny chicks are more fragile too. If you can hear them that's a great sign. I would just be patient & make...
Hi there, I have some tips to help your chick if needed, I've been hatching for several years & have seen this a lot. I agree the chick may get out on it's own & that's always best. Many times chicks in the same hatch will hatch differently- some just pop out quickly, while some may take 8 hrs...

Does anyone know what color eggs I will get when the parents are white egg layers crossed with blue layers? I have some very pretty crossbreed pullets: the father is an Opal Legbar rooster, a blue egg laying breed. The mothers were all white egg layers: Exchequer & Golden Leghorns, a Blue...
Hi there, I may have the answer you've been looking for: I used to run a 50- horse boarding facility in a flood-prone area. In the winter, the horses wood churn up the mud so bad, some would be almost up to their knees in soupy mud. Tried everything, nothing worked. Then an old pro suggested...
ROOSTER LOVER HERE!!
I agree with Ms Temple, roosters deserve a chance. They are all different & each one has his own unique personality. I have a few flocks & in some I have an equal amount of roosters & hens & it works out fine. It just depends on the roo. Giving them as much space as possible...
Thank you, I think you were right on the money; when I checked on her late last night, she seemed normal again. Thank goodness, I was so afraid it was going to get worse & she'd suffocate. Is there any way I can prevent this in the future?
Hi, I have an 8 month old Leghorn who started gasping for breath last night, like she's having an asthma attack. She is wheezing both when she breathes in & out. I was able to look a long ways down her throat & there seems to be no obstruction or swelling/redness. If anyone can help me to help...
I agree- the jerking of the body as nervous system shuts down can be very unnerving. I don't want to see lots of blood when euthanizing a pet chicken either.
This was an extremely hard thing for me to get used to & as I learned more about chickens & enjoyed them more, it only got harder...
I had to euthanize many of my own pet chickens this year b/c of a contagious virus. Breaks my heart, esp the very young ones. It never got ez for me. I found the best way for me (& them) was to wrap them in a towel or cloth 1st, lay head on hard surface & whack with a heavy, thick piece of wood...
Not positive on this, but from what I've read about genetics & egg color, crossing a blue egg layer breed with a brown egg layer breed will give you a hybrid which lays green eggs. "Jailhouse Green"??
Hi there,
First, I'm very sorry about your girl. I love mine very much too & it is always hard to lose one.
We have been having a terrible heat wave here too, and I've been spending most of my days trying to keep all the animals cool & comfy. I have a few different coops & I've noticed that...
Hi there, I just saw this & thought I'd add a some insights that I think may be helpful.
I have been keeping both free-range & cooped chickens for a few yrs, so I often find eggs that I'm not sure of when they were layed. I've found that eggs can sometimes last a lot longer than we'd think, (and...
Thank you all very much for the input. She will start a vitamin regimen today. She has been getting Purina Flockraiser, which is a hi protein starter feed, along with scratch grains, kitchen scraps & occasional weeds & boiled eggs for treats. I had just started switching them to layer feed, so...
I just noticed our 6 month old Leghorn hen is having trouble getting around. She can't seem to stand up straight & looks as if she's in a sitting position, with her lower legs on the ground in front of her, (see picture). Has anyone seen this? Any ideas as to what I can do for her? She can still...
I've had very good luck using peepers on my agressive roos. It doesn't hurt them & actually seems to have made the agressive ones much happier, b/c they're able to live with the rest of the flock now & are accepted. I even have a bachelor flock of 12 standard roos of different breeds all living...
Sounds like your rooster is just young & inexperienced, so a little too overzealous with the girls. Brahmas are wonderful roosters. I have had very good luck using "peepers" to reduce overly agressive behavior in hens & roos. I have multiple roosters, both with hens & in a "bachelor pen" with 12...
