It's such a bummer when you have to dispatch young birds. But it sounds like she might be on the way out anyway. You could wait 24 hours and maybe the problem solves itself. Or if she starts eating and drinking then maybe she wants to live.
If you decide to dispatch, I prefer beheading because...
Yes, from the picture it looks like a blood ring, and also yes, at 14 days developing eggs will look pretty full.
Something that helped me was googling "day 14 candling" or whatever day you're on and looking at other people's videos on YouTube. It's nice to have the comparison.
Good luck with...
I process my extras. Sometimes I can give a cockerel for free to someone who might like them for breeding or flock protection. (The one I gave to a friend died while attacking a mountain lion, and I gave her his nephew as a replacement!) But mostly I cook them and then pressure can quart jars...
I keep dry feed full all the time inside the coop and water outside in the run. Once a day(ish) I fill their water bucket outside the coop, throw a scoop of scratch grains and dry worms in the run, and dump our compost bucket of kitchen scraps in the run. Then I get eggs, put a handful of hay in...
Yes, you can, but it takes a while. I paid good money for some dark hatching eggs to make sure I got a rooster with dark egg genes. I have gotten marans from farm stores that lay both light and dark eggs. I choose the darker ones for hatching. I have 5 marans hens right now, and they lay a...
Pretty egg pictures for you guys... My friend hatched some of my eggs. The super dark olive in this handful is from the daughter of my Onyx olive egger with a BCM father. We know it's her daughter because Onyx is my only crested bird and the new pullet has a tiny crest. Now I want to hatch ALL...
I never wash eggs. I separate the dirty ones and use them at home. Clean-ish ones go to egg customers. If they're gross I give them a quick rinse before I crack them. :)
We got 6! 1 assist, and 5 hatched on their own. Two others died in shell without pipping. Eggtopsy looked like they quit on day 17-18. They were both facing wrong way in the shell and did not internally pip or absorb their yolks. All 6 live hatches are looking fluffy and strong.
Our kitten...
"sloshy" is never a good adjective. That's always how I tell they're dead when they've quit midway. I'll say, "this one doesn't smell bad, but it looks sloshy".
Just stumbled across this. I know it's old.
BCM eggs really do lose less moisture. I am hatching 8 BCM eggs and the air cells on some of them are really tiny. I also incubated at about 20-25%. There seems to be a strong correlation between darker/thicker shells that are hard to see through and...
Yep. Faces, combs, and wattles look lighter whenever they are not laying. They will look redder when they are about to start laying again. It's a hormonal thing, I think.
I agree. Mine is molting right now, so it's nice to look at pictures of what she's supposed to look like. Hopefully OP will post an update in 6 months so we can see who wins the guessing game. :)
