Are these really Black Copper Marans?

Do you have an update on the egg color from these two? I have an olive egger pullet now who looks very similar to this, and I'm trying to guess if she could be a BCM x CCL mix.

    Onyx Olive Egger?

I wondered about that because of the name. She has 4 toes, not 5. And her skin is very white, not black. But mystic onyx can have a little crest like hers. Supposing she IS half mystic onyx, and supposing she really is an olive egger, what blue egg breed would explain the leg feathering?

    Leg issue? + possible roo

Yeah, you got a roaster for sure. Cornish Cross. Sorry, and enjoy your stew.

Hen attacking young rooster ... is this normal?

She's in charge of "her" flock and he's the new guy looking to take over. Perfectly normal behavior, and they'll probably work it out.

    Onyx Olive Egger?

I bought this chick labeled as an "Onyx Olive Egger" from a farm store in Colorado. She has white black washed legs with two or three feathers on a couple of her toes. Single comb that is black in color so far. Plumage is coming in mostly black with faint flecks of copper brown here and there...

Did I harm my chick, or am I overly worried?

Sounds like a very well cared for chick. :) As long as she's warm and dry now she's fine.

5 week old Maran-pullet or cockerel or too early still?

That BCM still looks like a girl to me. I've raised 6 or 7 of them and had one cockerel of that breed. He was a REALLY obvious boy by 8 or 9 weeks. The females always make me wonder with the early comb growth. I have a 6 week old that I go back and forth on every day right now. I'd actually...

3 momma hens on one clutch

When I had this happen, my two hens tried to "co-parent" for about a day, and then the bossier of the two hens took over both chicks (there were only two) and the second hen lost interest and was broken of broodiness. I would be more concerned about them breaking the eggs by accident than...

    Broody failure

There's my whole post above. I will also add that my broody hen was an experienced mom already. She hatched and raised two by herself last year, so I was fairly sure that she would take care of these if I did a good job transferring them to her. If your hen is inexperienced, I would probably...

    Male or female?

They might be olive eggers. That little crest on top looks like a CCL mix.

    Gender?

I'll play. I say #1 and #4 are for sure cockerels. Keep an eye on #2 and #3. #4 and #5 look like pullets.

    Sleeping in nesting box

I don't think it's worth tearing your hair out over. :) It's pretty common for my younger pullets to like to sleep in a box, and for the the older adult hens to sleep on the roosts or the shelf above the nests. I find mine will go to the highest available roosting space, so the bar you added...

    Bear Problems

Hot wire is the best thing for bears. I have heard of people smearing a little honey on the hot wire so they're sure to test it. We have lots of black bears in our area too. I have an outdoor dog who barks and a radio in the coop that plays talk radio all night.

Should I force water to my broody hen?

I also have one we just call Broody Hen 'cause that's become her name now. You basically have 3 options. Well, actually, 4 options. 1) Keep breaking her every time. 2) Give in and let her have some fertile eggs, but only if you're ready to deal with the extra chickens. Luck has it they'll...

    Breed?

Olive egger with Blue Copper marans in the mix. And yes, possibly a cockerel? Keep watching.

    Hens brood won’t break

A couple hours isn't long enough. Try a wire bottom cage (with no nesting material) like a dog crate or rabbit hutch. Keep her in there for about 3 days.

    Is this a rooster?

Yup. You got yourself a boy there. My friend named his rooster that looked like that Mellow Yellow.

    tick’s n’ chickens

I think they can, but I haven't seen it. And I have plenty of both (ticks and chickens). They'll eat them sometimes, too!

Looking for tips on successful chick adoption by broody hen.

The other good advice I got when I tried this the first time was to get them a little cold first, so that they will want to stick with her. Often in cases of failure, the chicks reject the mom, not the other way around. Getting them cold makes them ready to snuggle up and sleep under her. Since...
