I've had hens with these exact symptoms. I've taken them to 2 different veterinarians and had success with Flagyl...or Metronidazol. That's an antibiotic for intestinal infections. My vet ran bloodwork, checked fecal samples and tested cultures for bacteria. I wanted a thorough exam because I've...
It's sooo important to treat early. My ordeal proves that! If treated early - getting the scabs off and soaking/medicating and wrapping will do the trick in about a week. My birds was exceptionally stubborn about not being held so my treatment was brief and unsuccessful. After a while she...
Could a yeaning for roughage/greens make them eat shavings? Just an idea. I thaw kale or grass that I've frozen and offer it to my flock of 9 about twice a week....and they go insane over it. They must need it. I've seen mine eat shavings on occasion. Hopefully not enough to do any damage...
I had one years ago - and her eyelid was crusted shut. I applied warm water with a Q-tip and she was able to open it. Before I did that she wouldn't eat on her own - so I believe it saved her life. She was healthy and fine after that. That's my advice!
Sounds possibly like sour crop. Bread is terrible for them - and I know they love it. She could have a fungal overgrowth so cider vinegar (1 tbsp)/gallon water for her to drink and plain yogurt are supposed to help. Does her crop feel 'squishy'?
Well I think catching it while in the crop was the best idea. If it went into the gizzard or intestines you're looking at a much more serious surgery and recovery. I had a bird with an impacted crop for months while I tried everything in the book to save her. Nothing cured so surgery was the...
Is there a numbing agent for dealing with injuries? I have Metacam but would like to clean out a foot wound that is very tender - my hen will not tolerate it. And another vet bill isn't possible right now. Ugh...the first vet visit didn't cure the bumblefoot.
5 months sounds young for those temps - I wouldn't want them out in less than 30F personally. 60watt lights won't heat much. And brooder lamps only heat what's right in front of them. If I were you I'd hang a couple heat lamps over the roosts where they sleep and let them stay under them. Not...
I'm quite sure the first sign is a swollen red appearance. After that you'll notice the white/purple/or black setting in. I hope your petroleum jelly does the trick. It didn't stop my one hen from getting it last year. The comb points stayed white until late summer. I find radiant heaters to be...

Add to that standing on one foot, not moving when prodded or enticed with food, though the huddling and lethargy are the biggest ones. When it's warmer the birds will all pop up when you come in with treats, and run around... not so when they're too cold. They...
I like the idea of 'signs' but have noticed that sometimes they won't show us. they are 'prey' animals and hate to show weakness until they're really bad off. I do agree that huddling is one. Lack of interest in food and wt loss too. I know the first sign of frostbite is a swollen red...
My coop stays in the 20s at night usually - and the girls have no frostbite/issues. I do have a flat panel radient heater about 3ft away from them.Tonight it's going to dip well below zero so I'm going to hang a tarp so their roost and heater has a smaller area - hoping to keep the heat from...
I hope your flock does okay in the next few nights Chickiebaby. I'm in southern NH not far from the Mass border and I hear we're in for temps well below zero tonight through Sat. My coop heater only raises temps about 20 degrees....may have to host a slumber party in the cellar! That's what we...
Thankyou for checking on that for me. Poor hen has awful diarrhea from the Baytril. She's eating okay but hates the taste - even when hidden in treats. So I have to force her to take it. Breaks my heart. I may call today and see if there's any other effective treatment. She's an angel for her...

I will have to look around for my suet feeders. The bears got some of them last year. But at least that kept them away from the coop. DO you just mount it to the wall??
I hang them from the ceiling - about level with the hen's backs. [/img]
Nail polish remover takes it right off!! Been there ;-)
I have a corncob holder made for squirrels - made of wire. Suet feeders work too. On cold/boring days I put corn cobs, halved apples, kale or even the seed cakes made for outdoor birds in them. My girls get excercise and really enjoy the...
She's exactly 5lbs so I'll cut back to 1ml. Poor thing hates the taste - I tried gravy and some of her favorite foods like grapes too. She wouldn't take it. Maybe tuna juice will hide the taste --- oh can't wait to have that all over my clothes tonight. She's eating well though - today I hung...
Thanks, to you and Ellen. I will make sure she's eating - and cut back to 1 ml if she won't. I wonder if I can break up the dose into 2 - morning and evening? Maybe that's a vet question.
Appreciate all your help.
Whoops, I was confusing and didn't realize it! It's the injectable solution but I've been instructed to give it orally. Glad you've had experience with this! What dosage did you give and did your bird hate the taste? I'm going to mix with gravy tonight. I know to be careful so she won't aspirate...
