**UPDATE**
Hi Everyone!
I wanted to give an update to everyone who gave me advice through my first broody hen hatching experience. Just a heads up this may be longer than I would like it to be.
After the first 6 chicks were born within 24 hours of each other we still had four eggs. I candled...
I was thinking about grabbing one of the other chicks but then I got worried about having issues integrating that one as well.
The in coop brooder is great! I have some areas in the coop where the chicks can fit but rest of the flock can’t, but this is next level and safer.
I do not have a big...
Right, the rejection has been my concern from the start. I'm going to wait to make sure the chick is good to go before trying to integrate. If she rejects the chick when can I try to integrate the chick into the flock?
Thank you! I used a wipe warmer, heating pad, and my hygrometer/thermometer to make a little incubator.
We have since moved the late bloomer into a larger wax box and I made the “mama heating pad” I discovered here.
I’m thinking I’ll wait until tomorrow night maybe to try and sneak the little...
Before starting a new thread I’m going to try here. She successfully hatched 6 eggs, however, she abandoned a few and yesterday one pipped even though she decided 6 was enough. I removed the egg, made a makeshift incubator and now have another chick.
My question is can I sneak this chick in or...
I don’t have an incubator but I do have a heating pad. This was 100% by mistake and I was not prepared or versed for this. I do have a heating pad… we’ve simply been cupping it to try and keep it warm.
Is the heating pad to just be set low?
Do I just do a couple drops is water around the opening?
I have a hen who just hatched 6 eggs (this wasn’t on purpose and y’all helped me figure out what to do).
She abandoned 4 eggs and one pipped (I think that’s right) yesterday but she hasn’t been near it. I’m including a photo bc it’s actively chirping and I’m not sure if it’s at a point where I...
Thanks to everyone for the help. So far one baby and one chick that didn’t make it. I removed the one that passed and am just checking every now and again to see if any more hatched.
I don’t think he’s a problem he’s a friendly guy.
I’ve built a barrier around their hen house ramp hoping to avoid chick tumbles until everyone is born. I’m hoping it’s low enough for the rest of the flock to get in and out and high enough to prevent chicks from falling.
I’ve also placed food...
My regular setup is the garden coop so the henhouse is accessible via a ramp and mama and babies are in the nesting box.
I’m wondering if I shouldn’t move them down so the chicks don’t potentially fall down then ramp?
Is the rooster a potential problem?
Im sorry I was not prepared for this but...
Hi! So I have 3 hens and one rooster for 4 years now. I’ve always been diligent about pulling eggs until now. Chicks are currently hatching with one out of the egg… my question is what do I do? I know there is probably a ton of information but I’m doing this all on my phone as I still don’t have...
Found a rehabber/sanctuary! As much as I would love to keep Darkwing (that’s his/her name now) Darkwing deserves better than I can provide... such as a flock. We drop him/her off tomorrow and they already have other orphans the same size. In the meantime I’m going to try and provide the best for...
Is there anything particular I should know?
There aren’t any places around me with duck feed so I guess chick starter non medicated, greens, and mealworms?
I read about them needing niacin but I’m not sure at what age they would need that supplement or how long.
Hiding the food sounds great and simple. The no talking part sheesh I may explode not reacting to the butt wiggle. I will def try to set him/her up for success. Not sure how successful I will be in the middle of suburbia but we shall give it a go.
I have 3 hens and 1 rooster who have been together since a few days old. We let them see the duckling but did not let them have access of any kind. Hoping I can find some starter feed.
Seems happy and healthy! Eating mealworms and layer pellets (all I have right now) in water and I have some greens I can give him/her. Definitely has a set of lungs that work!
