Hi all,
Last night a friend of a friend dropped off a 2 year old hen because she was being bullied by her flock. She appears to be a NH Red. They mentioned that she might have some vision problems and used to be a house chicken.
Upon further inspection, I do believe that she is completely blind...
Hi all,
We have a camera in our backyard to monitor our chicken coop. For about a month now, the same raccoon has been visiting our coop almost every single night. I’ve tried yelling at it, throwing things (missed), installing motion lights.... it’s determined. It hasn’t figured out how to...
Update: I gave her some food mashed with water, pedialyte, and applesauce. I tried to feed her a scrambled egg but she wasn’t interested. She ate a bit (which is great) but now she’s back to being a huddled ball. Her poop is still liquid
Hello again,
I started cleaning her coop to look for clues and there were maggots in her poop (it’s black fly season). I checked her all over and saw no signs of any on her, but I soaked her in warm water with some Dawn dish soap and then used a hairdryer to fluff her back up just to be...
Hi everyone,
I have a 3 year old Rhode Island Red. She has just started her spring molt.
A little backstory: her name is Poppy and she has been living separated from the flock (4 others) for about a year and a half. We’ve tried reintroducing her many times but it always ends in disaster. We...
Thank you all for your fast responses! I was very concerned and anxious so it’s good to hear that it is most likely just occular, we will keep a close eye on her to watch for any new symptoms. That website looks very interesting @FlyingNunFarm, thank you for sharing!
Hi everyone,
I just noticed that my 2-year-old Easter Egger hen has a constricted pupil. I am very concerned that she may have Mareks. I just called the feed store that we got her from 2 years ago and was sad to hear that they don’t vaccinate against Mareks. She lives in a small flock with...
Thank you all for your reply! We have a friend with about 14 chickens so we are going to play match-maker and see if she likes the one we pick! I definitely think she needs a friend. Thank you all again!
Thank you for your reply! I think she is a standard, and she looks just like my neighbors RIR, just without all the feathers and very skinny. She lays large eggs almost every day (~60g) but has recently started eating them even though her diet hasn’t changed. I think she is getting pretty...
Hi everybody, I have an almost two-year-old RIR named Poppy who has been separated from her flock since about November due to bullying. Her best friend died about two months ago who she’d been raised with from day 2. The other four chickens I have will try to fight her through the fence whenever...
Hi everybody, I have a almost two-year-old Rhode Island Red hen (her name is Poppy:)). She started getting bullied about a year ago, and we removed her from the flock about September/November because it started to get pretty bad and she was missing most of her feathers. We removed her from the...
Thank you so much to everyone who replied. Unfortunately, she passed away last night in her sleep. Thank you again, you were all very helpful and your advice and experience were appreciated
thank you for your advice!
We brought her inside a couple hours ago because when I went into the garage to check on her she had brown fluid coming from her beak. I checked for an egg and didn’t feel anything but I soaked her in warm water just in case. She has stopped dripping fluid from her...
I’ve had the heat lamp on and she’s staying in the garage. What would you recommend feeding her? I don’t want to give her food that isn’t necessary or that won’t give her what she needs if that makes sense. Should I just mash up her food?
I have a 1 1/2 year old barred rock hen named Ziggy and she has been acting VERY lethargic since Thursday. She fluffs herself up and sits in the corner with her head and tail down and eyes shut. She is usually a very chatty bird but hasn’t been talking at all and I’m able to pick her up with one...
I think she did a soft molt a couple months ago, but every couple days I find a black feather in the coop. Is it possible she is still molting and this is why? Could it be why she is lying down and sleeping a lot?
