my point was that they are great layers and nice birds. You are right, they are fine in a barnyard mix, you just are not getting the mix you think you would. Had a few BSL and their chicks were a cute mess. My RSL had all
most all white male chicks.
My Neighbor had them, so it was a natural thing to buy a few off him. He loved them, I enjoyed them and wow what great egg layers!
Had one rooster, he was my #2 out of 3. He cleaned up what #1 was not interested in.
So am soon picking 4-5 chicks, I want a light brahma and at least one Easter egger. Don't think I want any sex-link, but I do want brown eggs. What other breeds should I get?

I have been away for a few years. I had a barnyard mix of about 25-30 hens and few Roosters and then hatched out about 100 chicks and sold about half. Lost the coop in a fire and moved twice. I now live in town and can't take it. I miss the farm, the country and my chickens so bad. So...I...

You know, he was not a bad rooster...he was just not as friendly to us or the ladies as some roosters are. He was not very aggressive to us, but was to a silver laced wyandotte roo I had.
We bought one in a mixed bag of pullets. She was bullied, pecked and not very heat tolerant. She was the first to lay and laid very, very well. But I found her dead on the coop floor on the first super hot day. At that time, she had no signs of being bullied....all of those came when she was...
The ladies were great. They are about as good of a layer as you can get, this side of a production layers (red, sex-link, stars). The roosters get very big and are not always nice. Mine was ok, but always had a chip on his shoulders because he was not the alpha male (Java was). He was rather...
I bought 12 from a farmer who hatched his own birds from is flock in an incubator. I paid for 12 and he threw in 1. Lost one on day two. They other 12 made it, but 8 of them were cocks. One of the roos was cross-beaked. I ended up with one roster and four hens. I traded and sold the other...
