    The first (fake) spring thaw

Ooh, 70 sounds like heaven! Enjoy it while you can! We will maybe hit 60 on Tuesday, and then suffer the same fate as you later in the week. However, it’s so much better than -20, so I won’t complain!

    The first (fake) spring thaw

I’m so glad you’ve been able to get out too! It must be exciting planning for new flock members. My crew has been steady at 7 since the “babies” hatched almost two wars ago, and 7 seems like a good limit. However, I can’t say that I haven’t been tempted by the Metzer catalogue…

    The first (fake) spring thaw

Thank you! Yes, it’s been incredibly lovely to be outside without needing a million layers. Indeed, that is the same lady Muscovy. She’s going to be 8 years old later this spring! I’m very thankful that she enjoys bathing, as she also enjoys mud as much as any other duck, and she would otherwise...

    The first (fake) spring thaw

Today it’s almost lovely, up in the 40’s with glimpses of sun. After a winter during which we had over a month straight below freezing, and a few too many days and nights well below zero, 40 feels tropical. The snow is melting, and the ducks are loving life! Happy fake spring to all!

How many duck eggs did you get today?

None yesterday, but I found a secret nest today with two. I’ll assume there’s still just one laying lady duck back online so far, definitely one of the Rouen girls.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your beautiful lady duck! ♥️

How many duck eggs did you get today?

One! The first egg of the year! Usually, they start building nests for a couple of weeks first, but this was just a random egg by the water bowl. I’m going to guess that it’s from Apollo or Bubbles as it had a slightly greenish hue, and as Remi and Tildy are too darn old to lay this early (or...

    When pets get old…

I’m just in need of a bit of a venting session. Be forewarned! I’ve got 3 cats ranging from 11 to 17 and -1/2. The youngest has a mass of some sort on his neck that still is undiagnosed. He’s had a fine needle aspirate, alll the blood work, and radiographs. He’s had a CT scan last year due to...

Acute neurological symptoms in adult Muscovy duck

Progress with re-integration! There’s still a bit of bratty behavior from Remi, however Mama Muscovy is not cowering like she was and has been doing a bit of chasing back, followed by some hearty Muscovy tail wags and trilling. She’s always been a character, and is wonderful to see her own...

Acute neurological symptoms in adult Muscovy duck

I have a coworker whose chickens got into fermented apples. They had similar symptoms, but not as severe. However, it could have been caused by that! At any rate, it has been a week and a half, and she’s doing very well. Remi still hasn’t accepted her back into the flock, but she’s regaining...

Acute neurological symptoms in adult Muscovy duck

Thank you! I’m definitely thinking that she must have gotten into something toxic. She had been enjoying going over to the neighbor’s mini apple orchard. The neighbors recently moved out and are in the process of selling their house. Maybe they did some sort of lawn treatment? Or maybe it was a...

Acute neurological symptoms in adult Muscovy duck

Thank you so much! She’s continuing to recover, and is now able to run a bit. She is quite a lot steadier, but still has an odd twitch now and then. I think the first bit of recovery was quick, but the rest may take a while. The main problem now is that Remi, who is the same age as my Mama...

Acute neurological symptoms in adult Muscovy duck

A good evening! She’s very hungry, at least for mealworms.

Acute neurological symptoms in adult Muscovy duck

Mid-morning update: I’ve just helped her bathe. She doesn’t feel secure in even the small tub, but she seemed to enjoy being sprayed off a bit. She’s now in a nice sunny spot and is preening quite well with much milder balance issues. She walked to her favorite preening spot unassisted, although...

Acute neurological symptoms in adult Muscovy duck

Hello all! It’s been a while. In general, all ducks have been doing great! However, I just came home from a family crisis situation to find that my 7 year old Muscovy duck had fallen ill. My husband, who was home taking care of the animals, said that she developed neurological symptoms quite...

    Welsh Harlequin?

Oh, your birds are lovely! What a beautiful family. They do appear to be Welsh Harlequins. The yellow bill is happens in some strains, I think. Someone else on here has a girl with a yellow bill. At any rate, I found this information for you...

Hatching experiment - Time to make my Muscovy a mom!

In 2 weeks, the ducklings will be one year old! As it will probably rain on their birthday, or I will be working, I decided to take pictures today. Everyone is well. Chester loves his mother very much and makes sure he keeps an eye on her at all times, even when she goes off to do “Muscovy...
