spinach SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN to chickens (or humans for that matter). it is EXTREMELY HIGH IN OXALATES and will bind with calcium, taking the Ca away from shell production and causing CalciumOxalate crystals which cause joint arthritis and can lead to kidney stones (in humans too)

btw - the same thing happens to humans. think OSTEOPOROSIS!! and calcium oxalate kidney stones and CaOx crystals re: arthritis! oh, joy.

Thin egg shell, breaking in nesting box, but has oyster shells

i had this issue after i gave my girls a bag of spinach - eggs w/no shell!! researched and found out the oxalic acid (super high in spinach) sucks the calcium out of their blood stream and leaves them none to use for their shell. they must be eating some veggies somewhere. if you find the source...

i have a 12x4x6’ coop enclosed w/1/4” hardware mesh. seems two girls are only laying every other day. i have rats but don’t think they are the culprit since the laying pattern is consistent. they are spoiled but i do make sure they eat their grain first before treats. they can’t have a...

Comment by 'karenm52' in article 'Table Scraps and Leftovers for Chickens'

I'd like to advise caution when feeding spinach! I fed my 3 girls half a bag of spinach only to have all 3 girls lay eggs with no shell the next day!! research revealed spinach (and rhubarb, white potatoes and almonds) have very high oxalate levels which literally suck the free calcium out of...
