Woah!! That’s a bit chilly... is it the humidity that makes it so much colder?? Poor plants and chickies! It’s currently 40F here in Northern Colorado @ 5:46am.
LOL I definitely didn’t realize this post is over a decade old.... oh well.
Agreed! - you can customize it to go vertically or horizontally depending on what kind of space you’re working with. I can take measurements next time I clean out the coop but my estimate is that I have roughly 26in of vertical space with the actuator mounted above the door and it is plenty to...
I haven’t tried a light sensor myself, but I’m sure you could play with one to try it out!
I typically only have to adjust it a couple times a year & usually just do it on/around day light savings. Winter months I think I have it set to open around 7:45/8:00am and close at 7:00/7:30pm...
It depends on what power system you’re going with. If off grid, can I assume you’re going solar? If that’s the case then you would want the solar panel / battery setup instead. The DC Power supply is for the other method, plug in / running power to the coop.
It might definitely be wiring with the DPDT relay OR timer. Im sure you’ve already triple checked the wiring though.
When MANUAL and the actuator closes, is it on Manual OFF or Manual ON?
Dang! Have you tried connecting the power source (DC supply+adapter or battery) straight to the linear actuator by any chance? I would try this juuuuust to make sure the linear actuator is working appropriately. Switch the polarities back and forth to extend/retract.
I can hear a slight “buzz”...
Thank you! :D I don’t know if anyone here has tried that method yet, but I have had a few others on my FB chicken groups try the battery//solar supply method and all indicated it worked out great because they already had or were planning a solar-light set up too.
Check out my tutorial on a DIY Automatic Door. Works awesome and sounds like it would be a good fit for your schedule :)

Here’s is a picture from yesterday! Now I’m leaning towards two pullers - their combs really haven’t grown much since the first couple weeks and haven’t turned red!
