I might be a little biased, but I would go with quail. Definitely easy to learn about and take care of. Less space needed, and they are very quiet. You hardly know they are around.
But of course it depends on your situation. I personally would have had chickens years ago, if I had the space...
I had this same issue with one of my 1 week old Coturnix quail last week. He is doing fine, eating and drinking like the rest, growing at the same rate. After doing some research I found it could either be vitamin deficiency or an accident in the brooder.
But then in my new batch only 2 days...
Congrats on your first few Japanese quail. :wee I love mine, and the Italian ladies are great egg layers, lay consistently every day for at least 3-4 months.
