    Feather picking

Thanks for your reply. I caught Thelma in the act!! I will check for pin feathers when I pull her off the roost later. She’s like trying to catch a greased pig otherwise!

    Feather picking

I have only two ladies, Thelma and Louise, who have been together their whole lives (2.5 years). They have a coop inside a pen. The pen measures about 10 x 15’. They free range with supervision, but haven’t been able to much lately with all the rain in Florida and an apparent advertisement...

    Hen sleeping in nest box

One of my two hens has recently starting sleeping (and therefore pooping) in one of the nest boxes. I checked her as best I could (she’s got serious attitude) for mites and bumble foot. She and her sister appear to be in good health. I’ve blocked the nest boxes at night for about two weeks...

    Funny looking egg

After a few weeks of laying, we got the mottled dark brown egg on the top in the attached photo. Is it anything to worry about? That hen’s eggs are usually dark brown with some speckles, but that one looks like a Picasso! It’s also a little rougher in the outside than usual. Thanks!

What breed of chicken is this, and what gender?

I think the farm/feed store got tricked. They didn't know what breed they were and told us newbies they were hens! They will take them back, however. Sadly we need to have non-crowing hens. We really like these guys; they have a ton of personality! We've learned a lot in a short time.

Thanks to all who replied to my question. After further investigation, we have confirmed that they are both Black Copper Marans and both roosters!

What breed of chicken is this, and what gender?

May be a dumb question, but how can you all tell they are males? Just the crowing? Thanks for all the replies; they are a handsome pair, that’s for sure.

What breed of chicken is this, and what gender?

Attached is a photo of our chickens Thelma and Louise. Our kids got them for my husband about 10 days ago and no one thought to ask what breed of chicken they are. We were told they were hens, but no eggs yet and I heard crowing this morning! Do hens ever crow?
