Thank you for this timely post! For me, it's been hit or miss with incubating chicks in the past. Glad you covered the various problems that can occur. I'm a bit more knowledgeable now, and ready for better results.
Thanks for the post, and sharing your experience.
With the rising cost of mealworms I decided to save some money and raise my own also. Started with approx 2000 mealworms from a local pet shop about 3 months ago. I use the 3 bin system, keeping the mealworms, larvae and beetles separate...
Thanks for the advise. I can see how people start with a few chickens, and then their flock grows beyond what they anticipated fairly quickly. My friend gave me his rooster cause he couldn't keep it, that is when I fun began. I do have a few separate coops and runs for the older and younger...
This is a mixed breed bunch. Daddy Roo is a New Hampshire Red, one mom is a Buff Orpington, another mom is a Road Island Red. Not sure that makes any difference. Having the roosters separated from the hens might work, would they still fight amongst themselves without hens in the coop? Hmmm...
Four months ago I incubated some chicks (my first time) The 1st batch, out of 6 eggs, only 1 hatched, a rooster. 2nd. batch 4 eggs, all hatched, 2 roosters, 2 hens. The young roosters seem to be getting along fine (for now) but I have them separated from the daddy rooster, and his harem. Not...
Just started my flock on fermented food too. Saves allot of $ as they don't need to eat as much, and it's more nutritious. They were hesitant at first, so I gave them little of both dry and fermented in separate containers. Then started to alternate one day dry, next day fermented. I combine...
My only Buff Orpington hen is about 5 years old. She had stopped laying eggs awhile back, but then we got a rooster and her egg production started back up. I can tell the buff's eggs are fertile when I crack them open. Should I attempt to incubate some? Or is she too old?
My first incubation...
Update, one chick hatched yesterday. Yay! I understand that if each egg was laid on different days they won't always hatch on the same day. But not sure how long emerged chick can stay in the incubator without eating or drinking. She is dry, very alert and noisy! Is it harmful to open and...
Just did a little more research on the external thermometer humidity unit I bought and found out others having issues with it accurately displaying correct humidity levels. So hopefully that is all it is. Next time need to make sure to read reviews before purchasing!
I also placed the incubator in the styrfoam covering. Temp is stable but humidity is below 50%. Maybe my humidity probe isn't working correctly? I can see moisture drops on the cover.
Unfortunately it does not have hole to add, I have to open the lid to add water. But it appears like there is enough water in it. Not sure why humidity is dropping.
This is my first time incubating chicks. Today is 21st day and I have one chick breaking out! So exciting! But the humidity is dropping to 45%. Can I open and add water if chick is already coming out? Concerned about the others.
Appreciate all your replies and advise. I do have a styroform cover over the incubator, so that may be enough to keep it warm. I'll candle them a few days after and see how they are doing.
I'm new to incubating eggs, been learning so much from this site, and YouTube videos.
Thankful to have others sharing their experiences.
I setup my new incubator, calibrated the temp and humidity settings, and added 6 eggs a few days ago.
But now I have a bit of a dilemma that I'm not sure what...
