    Incubating in my bra

Does this mean you're going to have a stronger bonding with that chick? enjoy!

    Painting the coop

There have been no chickens in this coop since early June because of the bird mites. The sealing and painting has been done and is free of smell.

    Painting the coop

Interesting but luckily we're off lead based paints in at least some parts of the world.

    Painting the coop

I think it will be but that said, no house paint is really clean except old fashioned whiting which is usually only used in barns because it gives off if you try to clean it. I'm going to paint the inside of the coop with something similar called Klaxo (Netherlands if not elsewhere) which is...

    Painting the coop

Thanks...I think I'm convinced now. And yes ventilation in the coop is very important for other reasons.

    Painting the coop

Iron oxide kept running through my head but my dictionaries were no help and I gave up before asking Google. I no longer live in the US but I could have asked my family!

    Painting the coop

Yes, thanks - absolutely barn red, though the color used now isn't quite as beautiful as the old barn red.

    Painting the coop

I think all paint is lead free these days. What I actually want to know is what paints can let off fumes for a long period after the paint is dry but only the outside of the coop will be painted.

    Painting the coop

No - lead is no longer used in any paint to my knowledge but I couldn't find a modern translation for the Dutch word for "ijzer-menie". The coop is on stilts, the chickens couldn't actually get at the outside, and the color of the paint is a brownish, or old red which we use on barn doors and...

    Painting the coop

My husband would like to paint the outside of our chicken coop with "red-lead" paint which is often used on metal against rust but can be used for wood too. I'm not sure how long we need to wait before there are no poisonous fumes coming off the wood.

    Moisture during hatching

Thanks - how do I measure the percentage? Until now I just add a little water every once in a while. The amount advised in the incubator booklet was only 100 ml to be replenished every two days up to the hatching time, whenever that is. The incubator is for maximum 12 chicken eggs.

    Moisture during hatching

I seem to remember from last year that you were to increase the amount of water in the incubator during hatching. Could somebody verify this? I have 4 early birds - thought I had another 5 days to go but the hen must have been sitting already when I rescued the eggs from her nest in the garden...

Month old chick with serious crop injury

No racoons here (normally). This is NW Europe. Martens prevalent, weasels too. But I find no information about how they go about killing and there's no mention of sucking blood. This is the time of year that young martens are running around learning how to get their own food.

Month old chick with serious crop injury

That's what I thought too - that weasels suck the blood. I'm going to look up the differences. What do martens do? Birds pick and tear so it looks like it was a bird but what scared it away? There's a small upside down crate the chicks could escape into but if it was a hawk he must have been...

Month old chick with serious crop injury

No it died after 2 days. We're still trying to figure out what attacked it: a weasel, a marten or a bird?

Month old chick with serious crop injury

Above are two pics which may be difficult to analyze!. I can remove what's sticking out of the crop but that's it as far as knowing what to do.

Month old chick with serious crop injury

One of my 4 chicks, a month old and healthy, in a pen outside during the day, has been attacked by unknown predator. The crop is open in a few places but what concerns me the most is at one end (?). I extracted food which had gotten stuck there but I am unsure where water and food will go now. I...

    Heating plate vs heating lamp

I'm using a brooder plate too and for the same reasons. It doesn't exactly feel like a cozy mother hen but the chicks don't seem to mind.

My 4 chicks are not yet 2 weeks old. They really go for chopped up greens but when I offered them a piece of apple they didn't know what to do with it! I'll wait with the grapes until the fall. My Concord grape gives a nice big seed. But I think I'll try cut up organic raisins now.
