You're so lucky they aren't spooked. Mine had to be kept in the coop for a week after the hit because they wouldn't come back in at dusk on their own anymore. They were choosing to roost in trees.
This is our mystery chick. I think it's a brahma, but I think it's too early to tell the sex.
It also has no feathers on it's feet.
They all came from Murray McMurray.
Yes! I have a "free chicken" that came with my order that looks like the brown one, and I had thought it was a brahma. I've got photos to post tomorrow of a few that are supposed to be girls, but they look a lot like boys to me.
I didn't know they would actually catch and kill it. I was trying to let the raccoons know that the chickens have their own protection team. Until that night the only thing that happened would be my pointer treeing a possum or armadillo. I just recently moved to our family farm, 62 acres and...
I had one hen disappear completely the day before Murder Night, but I assumed it was a rapture. It was daytime and we had left them outside to forage alone.
Murder night it grabbed one hen and pulled the head off my big Roo.
Yes they can! Raccoons are the worst. They have little devil hands. I let my dogs stay out really late after what is now referred to as "Murder Night". They all came back covered in dried blood and little scratches on their noses. I believe they played tug a war with that raccoon.
Funny...
I lost 1 hen and 1 roo in one night to raccoons about a month ago. The ripped the head off my roo and pulled a black sex link pullet through fence completely
Sounds like a raccoon if you don't have 1" or smaller HC covering the entire structure. They will come back every day. The entire raccoon Facebook community knows dinner is at your house.
I love this idea! I wonder how many cattle panels I'd need to make a coop big enough for 25 chooks... I also like your feeder idea. I did something a little different and my girls don't really like sticking their heads in the U to eat.
