If you go to the APHIS HPAI site that gives the number of cases and download the data, make a time chart, it shows a pretty interesting trend that supports the data that HPAI is a heat labile virus. There’s really no treatment for it in poultry, but dairy cattle have been successfully treated...
It was likely small subcutaneous fat deposits of xanthophyll (color pigment) rich fat. Leaving it will add color and flavor to the broth. Xanthophylls are also rich in antioxidants.
Hey all!
I am judging my first 4H show this year (poultry/rabbit). It will include production birds, fancy breeds, and showmanship on the poultry side. I’ve judged poultry before in school, but not had to place with ribbons. If anyone else judges 4H poultry, how do you handle the Danish ribbon...
Hi everyone! I've had a very busy past few years, hence the lack of participation 😬. I've just recently completed my master's degree in poultry science with a focus in laying hen nutrition, so that's what I've been up to! I'm happy to have accepted employment in a position that will allow me to...
I'm sorry for the late reply! If you want to go by the USDA National Organic Standards which are what allow for a zero day withdrawal period, the dosage is 1mg of fenbendazole per kg BW (or ~0.454 mg/lb). So with an approximately 10 pound chicken and a 10% suspension, the dose for that...
I’m so sorry! Because there is a chance it is Newcastle’s (Avian Pneumoencephalitis) which is a reportable disease, if you are able to, I’d suggest sending a couple of the deceased to a lab for testing. Many diseases present very similar symptoms, so this will give you the most accurate way of...
I ran formulation on the diet, excluding your protein additions since there are not known amounts and they are somewhat sporadic and instead including the suggested meat meal. Even with the meat meal inclusion, the crude protein of this diet is nearly 3% below what it should be for this age of...
I can see your inclusion amounts from the picture you posted. The picture makes it look like it was run through homemade feed formulation software, which isn’t necessarily bad, but can miss some things. I’ll run it through commercial grade software and let you know what it comes up with.
If you want, I can run that diet through my diet formulation software later tonight and give you an idea of what, if any, nutrients they are deficient in.
Hello everyone! So one way my family likes to stay connected across the country is by texting each other a daily joke in our family group chat. Strange? Maybe, but pretty entertaining. Anyways, I need more jokes! My sister is definitely winning this thing right now. Not that there's an actual...
Most ducks do really well in the cold, and should be just fine. Our ducks actually LOVE when it snows and go "swimming" around in the snow. The only time we ever had trouble with any of ours was a couple winters ago it was in the negative teens - negative twenties and the person taking care of...
If it is cancer, as I suspect it is, it is very rapidly growing. If it’s an option, you could see if a vet would remove it and that may solve the problem. However, I know that’s not an option everyone has. I’d leave it be for now and just keep watch on it. Should it rapidly progress and...
Yes, she is a little young for cancer. Like @Eggcessive said, it could be fowl pox, but given the time of year (though you do live in a more mosquito prone environment), the fact that it is very localized, and that she isn’t displaying other symptoms such as weight loss or lethargy, I wouldn’t...
I don’t think it is fowl pox or a peck wound. There are two things I think it could be. The first is that she got something under her eye and it got infected. The second is cancer. Were she my bird, I’d take a look at that smaller yellow bump at the base of her eyelid and if it a slight squeeze...
