    What’s this?

She's about 2 yrs old. I noticed just last week that she had begun 'crouching' again when approached, and thought she was maybe fixing to start laying again, then found the lash egg. Wondering if that's what instigated her crouching and trying to lay. Still monitoring.

    What’s this?

Thank you both for setting me on the right track. Has not happened since but am continuing to monitor. This hen has not been laying for over a year now; otherwise eating, drinking, behaving (dust bathing, foraging, etc) as per usual. Will try to post update on progression/treatment.

    What’s this?

Any one able to help identify this? Found it in the nest when I went to check for eggs sitting in what looks a bit of poop. No egg. Don’t know if it conveys in the pic but it’s solid, very much the look and texture of raw chicken. I’m confused.

Non-emergency flystrike question: What did it smell like to you?

I stumbled upon a VERY effective treatment for flystrike just about two weeks ago. With all of the rain we've been quite the mess down here in South Louisiana. My Buff Orpingtons freestyle in the backyard all day long, and I wasn't out as much as I usually am to notice that the flies had...

    Sudden onset of wheezing/whistling

Thank you. So far everything is normal as she's out and about today; curious if it'll happen again when she's at rest tonight. If it IS the heat we're in trouble...this is barely the beginning of it here in south Louisiana. Good reminder about ice...

    Sudden onset of wheezing/whistling

Thanks for giving me ideas on things to check...crop feels fine; eyes are clear. I'm confused bc again this morning like yesterday I'm not hearing anything. She's not in any distress or showing signs of it when out in the yard and moving about. I have in the past seen what you are referring to...

    Sudden onset of wheezing/whistling

Hi - my buffs free-range from sunrise to sunset. I was outside off and on all day, nothing unusual going on. Left tonight for a bit and when i came home and killed the engine I could hear all the way from the driveway my younger buff wheezing and whistling from her perch. Very sudden onset - I...

Chicken's tail drooping, sudden neck jerking movements. Help!

I really do appreciate your advice. This was totally out of my wheelhouse, and I probably could have asked a neighbor who hunts and is used to these things for help, but I'm a believer in taking responsibility for what you choose to invest in. If it helps anyone contemplating the best way to...

Chicken's tail drooping, sudden neck jerking movements. Help!

I appreciate your feedback. My buffs are all around 3 years old; she stopped laying some time ago and generally just appeared to 'slow down' a bit, though she still seemed perfectly content. We would tease that she decided to retire. But two days ago I noticed that she was staying a bit off to...

Chicken's tail drooping, sudden neck jerking movements. Help!

Hi - I'm here looking for the same answer but see you didn't get much feedback. Having exact same issue with one of my buffs - did yours resolve? Figure out what it was?

When do I uncover the nesting boxes?

Thank you for taking the time to reply! Yes, my concern with uncovering too early was to avoid a bad habit of them sleeping in there. They seem to be fluid in their sleeping habits; sometimes in the coop, sometimes on the roosts in the run - so I didn't want to give them yet another option. But...

When do I uncover the nesting boxes?

Hi are you still around on this site? Mind if i ask what you eventually worked out with uncovering the nesting boxes with your buffs? My three are 4 1/2 months old now and I'm thinking they're getting close [but not sure really] and have no idea when to uncover. Thanks if you see this!

    Louisiana anyone?

One hen is a buff orpington, and the rooster is a rhode island red, and the second hen looks to be a little of both of those two. Looks mostly RIR, but has some buffO look about her.

    Louisiana anyone?

Hi, I'm in Baton Rouge. I had someone give me six 2 week old chickens and a coop in June. Built the run myself (!) and am able to let them out to free range a good part of the day. Only thing is, one by one at about 10 weeks they started crowing....so out of the six, I've only got one really...

Is this Columbian Wyandotte a rooster or a hen?

Hi! can you give me your experienced opinion on gender of these two??

    Retrain a hen?

i think I'll be facing the same - mine are young still and not laying, but typically out all day long. Will be facing that eventually - like the idea of leaving them in until noon and then letting them out after they lay. Too hot here to start that habit just yet tho.
