She won't like it, but just put her in a vat of cool water up to her neck. Keep her underwater for at least 5 minutes(i pet her and talk to her to calm her down but it works very time).
I love that they hang out with the adult quail in my yard, but i hate that they scatter their food all over. They just peck it out of any container and waste over half of it!
Oh, that is so helpful. Thanks. I have a small kitchen and am using two pickle jars and i think you are right - the scum is easily stirred down and is not anything like mold. Getting used to the sweet smell. My girls love it and am rotating 3 days with one jar and making sure i keep some water...
My first batch of fermented grain is bubbly and wonderful and my girls love it! So now i put more grain in and have to wait 3 days? Do i start another batch so i can alternate?
So, i'm not sure how to get into this conversation so my apologies if i'm butting in. I have just started fermenting my first batch and thought that i had read that i can just take some feed out and keep adding to the ferment to keep it going. Is that correct? And if so, can i add some veggie...
Hm, was just wondering if i could just dissolve a calcium carbonate capsule that i use into their water. Would that give my girls more calcium? Would it be too much?
Oh, so sorry for the bad news about your old girl. Since i can't figure out how to ask a question of my own...i'll just try here. Found this thread like thing in my girl's poop in the morning. (Droppings from the roost.)
IS IT A WORM? I have 4 hens who are all moltilng but seem very lively...
Just went through a week of over 100 degrees in Spokane and more on the way. I have silver wyandottes. Water, water and shade are most important. My girls loved digging in the cool dirt after i sprinkled it down.
Put a pie pan with a layer of water in the freezer. Then put corn kernels, peas...
Is this how i enter the "molting chicken contest?
Here's my "mangy" mama. She doesn't know that she isn't quite cute anymore.
Here's what she'll look like soon!

Not sure how to reply to the questions above - maybe it's "aart"?
I am in Spokane, WA. We've had some 100 degree weather lately but this condition has been going on since March. The mom of these two hens was definitely eating the feathers off the two girls's backs (both hatched May 2019). She...
No rooster. I gave away this 1 year old's mama cuz she was eating the feathers off this babe in the early spring and now wonder if the other babe (from the same batch) has taken up the habit. So now what do i do??? I will go to the feed store tomorrow and see if there is some kind of nasty...
I thought that the mother of this hen was eating her feathers so i gave the mom away. It's been 5 months. My girl is growing a few feathers but her neck is almost raw with just a few feathers sticking out. She's laying 5 eggs/week. Seems happy - not itchy. She takes dust baths frequently. Lots...
Thanks, the black poo has disappeared and just realized from your suggestion that they "broke" into my compost the other day. Silly birds! I am not so worried anymore. Whatever it was- it's gone through their system with no bad effects that i can see.
