    OMG THE FLIES!

I am having a serious problem with flies! The ground in the run is covered. My chickens free range several hours a day but this is insane. I did not have this issue last summer. Is there anything I can coat the ground with to deter them from the run.m, but still safe for the girls? Holy Moses...

    Unusually large craw

Ok thanks. Mom always called it a craw. But it’s not unusual for her to come up with her own terminology.

    Unusually large craw

Im not totally sure if this is even a problem but this chicken has a larger than normal bulb on her breast, what I think is her craw. Should I be concerned, just watch, treat with something?

Long awaited eggs have arrived but...

It’s an old timy bag, there is no ingredient label or supplemental facts. It is whole grain natural stuff. It does have cracked cron and sunflower seeds in it. Everyone around here uses it just the way I am with great success. I had another soft egg already this morning and Helen had her usual...

I’m feeding them a local homemade store feed and laying pellets. Both are 16.5% protein. They also get chopped kale/carrot tops/slit grass, a hard boiled egg per day and maybe some fruit occasionally. Oh and some bird seed here and there. They are brand new layers. Only one has been laying every...

Long awaited eggs have arrived but...

I’ll try to make this short. My hens are golden sex link and RIR. 3 of each. 2 of the GSL are laying and 1 of the RIR. There was a 4th egg today and I have no idea who laid it. They are 22 and 21 weeks respectively. The hen that laid at 17 weeks lays with no problem. Nice egg every day. Even a...

Canadians! Where do you get your grit and oyster shells?

My mom has been using crushed up eggshells for years. She's never needed to supplement oyster shell. I only have one laying so far, so I'm not speaking from my own experience, just what I learned raised on the farm.

    Still waiting...

Hi! I have 3 Gold Sex Links hens, 18 weeks and 3 RIR hens, 17 weeks. Last week we got our first two eggs. It came from the largest of the GSL, she is the only bird laying. The day she started laying one of the RIR hens wanted her dead. I mean dead. I took the boss hen out and have been trying to...

    New to urban chickenry

hey there!! I have 6 hens and live not in a rural but also not urban area. We are stuck in the middle. I have really missed the farm life so on a whim my wonderful husband got me some chicks. Who were then murdered by a hawk three weeks later. I replaced them the next day where they lived in our...
