    Pearl Star Leghorn

Thats what I was thinking. It will be interesting to see what he looks like. He seems to be getting more dark colorings almost daily.

    Pearl Star Leghorn

We have been raising our most recent batch of layers and I ordered a Pearl Star cockerel in the mix. A friend has one and it came out with a rose comb and the typical brown leghorn coloring. At this point in time mine, which is younger than his, is white and black. Do they change colors as they...

Chick feed at 7 or 8 weeks

At 7 or 8 weeks what do you feed your chicks? Had very good luck with purina but local places keep raising the price. We have 38 chicks currently that are all feathered so we go through quite a bit of feed.

    Heat lamp vs. Heat pad

I'll look I to that cave idea. On a side note, has anyone ever had a chicks eyes get pecked? I couldnt figure out why one was standing there after the others scurried off when I came to the brooder. Both its eyes are pecked, I think it happened during their trip here from the hatchery. I held it...

    Heat lamp vs. Heat pad

Can the heat pad be put on the floor with the wood shavings or does it need to be hung to the side of the brooder?

    Heat lamp vs. Heat pad

Our fifth batch of chicks is arriving in a day. We have them set up in our garage at the house we are moving into in a couple weeks. The heat lamp is concerning me as the garage isnt insured right now(because of one curled shingle). Do the brooder heat mats carry the same fire risk as a heat...

    Cinnamon Queens and egg pecking

So now theyve graduated from eating all the eggs to only eating two but still peck the ends of some. Just enough to make the egg trash. I did buy one of those $10 OSB nests from TSC just to experiment with. I out two fake eggs in it and a couple hens lay in it. No eggs pecked or eaten so far...

    Cinnamon Queens and egg pecking

Thatd be correct. 33 total hens. Five boxes. Theyve been laying since January. That's why I thought it was odd that this was suddenly an issue. They only like to use three though so I thought maybe I'd hang another couple somewhere else.

    Cinnamon Queens and egg pecking

They used to roll fine. I'll check it out when I get home from work. They're nestomatic boxes. Last week was really bad we lost four dozen over a week. I added a Flock Block and it seems to have curbed their mischievous enthusiasm so we only had half as many eggs broken.

    Cinnamon Queens and egg pecking

Yes flocks are separated according to age. That was my thought initially so I removed the astroturf mat that came with them and replaced with plywood and cleaned any crud out of the bin where the eggs go. I guess it could be that larger eggs aren't making it through the slot fast enough. This...

    Cinnamon Queens and egg pecking

About half of our flock is cinnamon queen. They lay lots of big brown eggs but the last two weeks they've decided to peck eggs and either eat the inside or just leave a spider web crack on the end. We have roll away nests. The other 30+ hens in our flock are fed the exact same thing and dont...

    Dead ducks

Last night we had something come into a pen and maul two ducks. Didn't eat them. My brother says it seems to have went through the flight netting. I was thinking weasels. It beheaded them whatever it was. Any other ideas? We've been at war with rats but got them at Bay finally and now this.

    Dead Hen

About a year and a half. I usually get 13 or 14 eggs a day out of 15 hens right now. I threw some grass clippings in today from the weed whip last night but there shouldn't have been anything bad in them. They're in a run and coop that could fit twice as many birds and they've never been violent...

    Dead Hen

What would cause a hen to seemingly just drop dead? None of them were acting strange when I left for work this morning but when I went to collect eggs just now one was dead in the coop. No signs of foul play. It looks like she just fell over.

    Mixing different age young birds

They will have a coop and run that is larger than they actually need, I keep one rooster in each flock. We keep different age flocks because we sell eggs with our produce and that way we never have a drast change in egg size/volume. The chicks I have now are probably about two weeks old, mixed...

    Mixing different age young birds

There are a few varieties of chicken I wanted to add to our flock, but they won't be available until June from the hatchery. The plan was to raise them with the ten I currently have so they are only a week and a half apart. So if I continue to raise the current chicks and then raise another...

    Which is closer?

That's what I was leaning toward. I'm hoping to raise one next year with a new flock of layers. Thank you!

    Which is closer?

So I know this is probably a game breed. But would a brown leghorn be closer to this coloration, or a Welsummer?

    Chicken Feed?

Do you live in an area with a feed elevator? Sometimes they will carry name brand feed at a discounted price and their own mixes. We started all ours on purina start and grow for 18 weeks then to the local elevators layer mash. But we live in a very farm oriented place.
