I have Pekins. They don't lay much in winter, as cavemanrich is exactly right. Just wait for longer days and you'll have eggs - then they'll go broody and stop laying again :celebrate
Also - I wouldn't worry about your rooster - he'll get the hang of it and the ladies will submit - it just...
So the ingredients aren't that different to the fly spray I got yesterday.....
"Ready for use Fly Spray. Can be used to control Flies, Moths, Mosquitoes, Ants, Mites, Lice etc. 0.25% Permethrin, 0.125% Tetramethrin, 0.75% Piperonyl Butoxide"
I'm doing the maths in that case....
Total Mite...
Yes, I think we can get that for dogs/cats - it's pretty pricey though considering I have around 30+ birds. I liked the idea of occasionally but routinely spraying the birds/coop with permethrin to keep things in check - but I guess if its not available in the UK and there's no alternative...
Thanks - that helps. Do you know what the active ingredients are in the total mite kill concentrate?
I have also used the pigeon ivermectin in the past - so that's another option - everything is so expensive here in the UK though! Makes chicken keeping far from economical...
Yes - I can get an Ant killer dust, which is 0.5% permethrin
I have used this on my birds in the past despite it not being licenced for poultry in the uk. It's just so messy and I'd need a lot to treat my coops...
I have red mites in one of my coops. I was aware they were there, painted the whole coop with creocote (a less toxic version of creosote as we can't buy that anymore) and treated the birds with DE. I thought they were gone, but they're back (probably the warmer weather). I'm looking for a...
Thank you. I'll just treat the coop.
There is just about nothing available in the UK other than natural methods, which don't work....most are DE based powders. :th
I know this is an old thread, but I've read with great interest. Would love to spray with permethrin, but can't find it available here in the UK. I am looking at a liquid "Professional Fly Killer" and wondering if it would do the same job - label says...
"Ready for use Fly Spray. Can be used...
Thanks Aart - very helpful.
My coop and run are covered so wild birds/animals have no access.
Previous experience with mites was 8 years ago - different set of hens, different coop. We were beginners and didn't know what we were doing - lost all our hens overnight to a fox (didn't shut...
Have checked really thoroughly both on birds and in the coop (and at night)
Can't see anything at all - which is great!
Any routine care I should be doing to keep it this way?
Ok - so today I go down to the coop to have a general clear up.
I'm embarrassed to say, the left over bag of poop I mixed for the fecal sample has been sitting on the shelf (my bad, I know)
When I picked it up to discard the shelf underneath has fluid which has leaked from the bag and...
Keep coop clean & tidy. Deep clean coop. Check with torch at night.
Anything else I should do to be sure I don't have any critters?
I have done all of the above and can't see any visible signs of mites (yes I know what they look like as have had a serious infestation in the past - but that's...
Ok - so got the fecal testing done at Westgate Labs as promised. I collected a large selection of poops, particularly any that looked abnormal - mixed them and then filled the sample pot. Results today say "clear" no eggs found.
To be honest, all looking much more normal now. Will...
Yep - so true!
And when we first got a rooster, the nearest neighbor admitted she liked it - lets hope she hasn't changed her mind...
Does it help to black out the coop window? It's a large converted shed with a large glass window - always left it so the hens get natural light, but could easily...
