Not sour crop - doughy crop to fluid filled and not emptying - ADVICE PLEASE

Thank you! She is still laying eggs regularly (I know it's her because she's been separated in a coop/run) so I'm hoping it's nothing reproductive but I know this can be the issue. With my last sour crop/doughy crop issued girl that I was worried about EYP. Luckily the vet aspirated nothing...

Not sour crop - doughy crop to fluid filled and not emptying - ADVICE PLEASE

Prudence is my one original ex-battery hen that has never had to go to the vets... yet! She is 13 months free after being rescued from slaughter in March of 2018. I am in the UK and she is one of 6! Background: Thursday morning, she was slow to come out so I caught her (much to her disgust -...

Sick chicken, will leave one alone if she dies

The British Hen Welfare Trust said I had a "baptism by fire" with the girls I was given last year because of everything I've been through with them. I think that's the problem with their previous ill treatment is that you can't tell the ... healthier ... ones from the really sick ones and I...

Sick chicken, will leave one alone if she dies

Oh no! That is so sad that they get dumped - they go to slaughter here (I'm not sure which is worse!) My girls had had their beaks cut too and they came home completely featherbare although most did grow their feathers back bar one! The max I've had so far is 5 however, if my "sick" chicken...

Sick chicken, will leave one alone if she dies

That is my plan RE a lone chicken (which I'm hoping she won't be)! I posted this at the weekend when the services weren't available for advice. The chicken that I thought was knocking at deaths door is either feeling better or is doing a good job at hiding her pain/illness (which I know chickens...

Sick chicken, will leave one alone if she dies

I left my previous girls a few days before being allowed out to scratch in the dirt etc. These will be my second lot of ex-battery hens and even with the few problems I do have that I don't know how to deal with, I have the advice line of the charity I rescue them through and also a very...

Sick chicken, will leave one alone if she dies

Oh I agree! I think they can finally relax and then they just get ravaged by all sorts of illnesses - I have had to deal with numerous (vent prolapse in the first week of ever owning chickens) It's heartwarming to see their progression which is why I am rescuing more :love

Sick chicken, will leave one alone if she dies

Rescuing is heartwarming and heart breaking at the same time! She wasn't right in the morning but seemed spritely in the afternoon. This morning she took her meds and gobbled up some spinach too - she was doing her usual excites jumping up at the fence for it. I'm hoping she just had a bit of...

Sick chicken, will leave one alone if she dies

Thank you! I know, and I'm glad they got to experience a good dust bath, sunbathing, lots of veggie treats and mostly love. It's just heartbreaking to think that I may only have one left on their years anniversary!

Sick chicken, will leave one alone if she dies

Update: She came out of the coop this morning and didn't stay in all puffed up. Although, her crop hasn't properly emptied so I've given her a previously prescribed (for her) gut stimulant in hopes it will shift what's left in her crop.

Sick chicken, will leave one alone if she dies

Weather wise is above freezing - it's currently 6°C at 8.30am and mid-end of the week it's expected to be highs of 12°C which is fairly good for the UK. It is drizzly with rain though

Sick chicken, will leave one alone if she dies

They were wormed mid January on flubenvet! I am very aware of the issues as I've had everything wrong under the sun with my girls. It was like a crash course in chicken keeping! I've had updates saying she has been much better this afternoon so will keep an eye on her!

Sick chicken, will leave one alone if she dies

One of my ex-battery hens has been on "palliative" care and anti-inflammatory medicatiom for almost 2 weeks now and had been absolutely fine up until this morning (she even laid a proper shelled egg the other day). But now, she isn't leaving the coop, is puffed up and isn't eating at all. I...

Is my chicken unwell or just feeling the cold?

Turns out she was unwell Her health started to decline - her comb began to get floppy and pale, she went off her food (she always loved her food) and she stopped being "her usual self" She was putting lots of energy into growing some new feathers too I took her to the vets this evening and they...

Is my chicken unwell or just feeling the cold?

We aren't below freezing at the moment. The other day is was -6 degC. Today it is 2 degC. The coop has some added wind breaks and a foil layer on top of the actual roof to add a little extra warmth. She only really ate when I picked her out the coop and put her on the floor. I will get my mum to...

Is my chicken unwell or just feeling the cold?

They have a sheltered part of their pen that is completely snow-free so she doesn't actually have to come into contact with the snow at all anyways They are all in bed now, her crop isn't as full as the others but there's a little food in it. I'm working all weekend so will get my mum to keep...

Is my chicken unwell or just feeling the cold?

Only the fact that she has been inside the coop for the majority of the day. The only time my girls have spend prolonged periods of time in the coop is if they have been unwell. I do tend to panic and overthink things during my "firsts" with the girls and this is my first winter so not entirely...

Is my chicken unwell or just feeling the cold?

Gertrude is an ex-battery hen who is almost 2.5yrs old (rescued in March last year). She has had a couple of health hiccups - nothing major. Currently laying sporadically, maybe had 1 egg from her in the past couple of weeks - can't feel any egg in oviduct (hoping there's no egg peritonitis but...

    Hens have stopped eating pellets

I only have 3 ex-battery hens that are still laying pretty much daily. When their egg production drops, I will change the grit I give them and I am already aware of this. I will only ever rescue hens in the future (the only reason I have them was to rescue) and will never have chicks, young...
