I also heard that the black vultures have gone after live animals but can’t remember where I read about it. We have both the black and turkey vultures around our house too, but I only worry about them with the mommas and their babies. My guineas go insane when they are circling low so I know to...
I have one of the tall rectangular water stations with the little red cups. I really like it for my young birds run but had a scare yesterday. I was doing my rounds to check on food and water stations and I looked over towards this particular water container and I saw what looked like my young...
So sorry! I’m no expert nor experienced enough but it sounds like they are fighting over who they think are their babies but like you said you don’t know who did what to which ones. What I would do is don’t let those two mamas share eggs to hatch but keep them separate and don’t let other hens...
I completely understand the freezing, I lived near Fort Drum for 10 years and just moved south 3 years ago, I was just giving you my experience with sand and why I liked it.
I use sand for my coops mixed with PDZ. I only have about 3” of the sand in each coop so I don’t follow the deep method. Every other day I scoop all the poop like you would with cat litter. I tried shaving but the smell and frustration of wet poop stuck to my birds feet drove me crazy...
The Mom is one of my silkies but the father must not be a silkie. The choice roosters could be... Easter Egger, Polish, or frizzle Cochin.. I’m leaning towards Easter egger because of the shape of the beak and it has a little fluff around the “cheeks”. This little chick is hard to get a good pic!
And it was a silkie who fathered this little chick. It has the black legs and five toes that gave it away lol. Can’t wait to see how the feathers will be since Mommy mostly smooth instead of the curled frizzle. It’s fun watching Mommy teach the baby!
