My family has some chicks from a white orpington roo and buff orpington and barred rock mothers. Are either of these crosses sex-linked as chicks? I used the genetics calculator and it looks like for the barred cross, males will be barred and females solid black, while for the buff cross they'll...
My babies (a cream Legbar, a buff Orpington, and a black Australorp) are doing well; they love scratching around the yard. The Legbar flies up to my shoulder whenever I'm near, and the Australorp wiggles her butt like she wants to jump up too but doesn't try unless I crouch down for her...
Buff Orpingtons are so pretty!!
Here is my Dulcinea when she was little, surveying her realm:
And here she is at about 10.5 weeks, enjoying my nice carpet:
They're doing pretty well! They continued to gain weight at a reasonable pace until they got big enough that it was harder to weigh them and I stopped.
My only fear right now is that one will turn out to be a rooster :)
To help her eat a lot, you could mix some warm water with chick food for her. You can also sprinkle some of the vitamins on it. I think this is one of the things that helped my tiny chick - she loved it!
Thanks for the advice everyone, it's good to learn all the ways people raise their chicks.
@casportpony, thanks so much for the charts - it's great to hear your experience. I didn't know some weight loss is expected - though it sounds like mine was still possibly below the norm.
The chicks...
Everything I've read about raising chickens says stuff like "if you catch problems early and act fast you'll have better outcomes". So that's what I'm trying to do.
Also, it's fun to track their growth (when they're growing), like how people raising young humans make marks of their height on a...
I got some into her last night, maybe 1/4 tsp. I didn't force any water on her because she seems to be drinking on her own ok.
She weighed in at 38g this morning; better than yesterday. She also seems a little more peppy. I've seen some reasonable poop from her. Here she is with her face...
Thanks for trying to help everyone. I know I'm a worrywart - it seems like I can find symptoms of every problem that I read about. But it really seems like losing weight at this age and size can't be normal :(
@ChickNanny13, ok I won't use the permethrin without actual evidence. I'm keeping...
Ok thanks, I won't worry about the bald spots. Yes, I stopped the treats after thursday morning.
The legbar is not being kept from the food - she eats all the time and her crop gets big. She just keeps losing all the weight again. She dropped 8g last night. She seems to be drinking fine...
I went looking for external parasites and didn't see any bugs, but I notice she has awful bald patches under her wings. Sorry this picture isn't great.
It's hard to tell but n the photo but the patch of skin is completely bare. Could this be caused by something like mites? I checked one of...
Ok, I haven't given them any more treats since those ones I mentioned Thursday morning. I'm not seeing any more greenish poop, though I am still seeing a little of the orangy poop. Overall their poop seems less soft too. However, I am noticing some watery poop, at least from the legbar.
The...
Thanks so much for the advice. Here is a picture of some representative poop:
This shows some orange stuff and some soft greenish-brown stuff that a lot of their poop is like. A lot of it is also drier and darker brown and some of it looks like not totally digested feed.
I'm cutting back on...
I have three chicks that are 6 days old today. I've been weighing them for a couple of days and they're not keeping up with what I've read they should. The Orpington and Australorp are about 42 grams, and the Legbar is 46. I think they're supposed to be close to 60g by now. They were 35, 37...
Thanks! I realized my past experience with chicks has always been with 20+, and with that many there was pretty much always someone zooming around, so to see the brooder go completely silent and still was weird at first.
They're here!!
They've mostly been sleeping for the last hour. Is that normal?
ETA: not long after I posted that they all came out and started eating and drinking a bunch. They seem pretty happy.
I'm so nervous too! I tend to be super pessimistic about anything that sounds exciting (kind of the opposite of spontaneous, lol) so it's been a real psychological exercise gettng myself to go for it this time.
Today is Chickens Eve for me, and I think I'm ready (but what if the brooder tips...
