When to butcher barnyard mix excess roos?

Hello, I've just hatched out 12 barnyard mix chicks, and unfortunately can't keep any more roosters. Our plan is to post online to see if anyone is willing to take any that are roos off our hands, and if not, into the pot they will go. They are various mixes, but mostly fairly heavy breed so I'm...

When to consider assisting a hatch?

Hello, I'm currently hatching my first ever set of chicks in my new incubator. I read up as much as I could, but I'm needing some advice on my one last egg. There were about a dozen eggs and the first hatched about 36 hours ago and by this morning (about 12 hours ago now) all the rest have...

Best starter incubator for a new hatcher?

Hi, I'm looking for recommendations on a good starter incubator. Ideally I'd like to have one that's pretty much automated so I don't have to mess with humidity or turning myself. I also have young children so I really want one with a window or a good view of the eggs as they hatch for that...

Why do some of my eggs have these dark patches on the ends?

It’s hard to get a good picture of it, but a couple of my hens are laying eggs with these darker patches on the ends frequently. At first I thought it was maybe not enough calcium but I’ve been supplementing it for months now with no change. Any thoughts?

    How much pasture per chicken?

About how much pasture would you need per chicken to allow them to graze full time without destroying the vegetation completely? We are purchasing several acres and so we will have plenty of space for the chickens at our new homestead, however for a few reasons we can't allow them to fully free...

    7 months not laying?

I have a 7 month old welsummer who I think laid one egg a month ago, nothing since. My hens do not free range and I have a camera in my coop so I’m quite sure of this. What do you think, keep waiting hopefully, or throw the towel in and accept that she’s a dud? She gets to stay in the flock...

    Check out this gorgeous egg!

My Welsummer FINALLY laid her first egg at 26 weeks today. But it was well worth the wait. Check out those speckles! I’m not sure if her eggs will continue to be like this, but I really hope so because it’s beautiful!

    Are these Roos or Pullets?

Well, I thought these two might be boys and it looks like they are. Bummer! Oh well, we have a large amish community in the area and they are always happy to take in the spare rooster.

    Are these Roos or Pullets?

Unfortunately, I am not allowed to keep them here. I wish I could though :(

    Are these Roos or Pullets?

Do you think these two are Roos or pullets? They were both labeled “olive eggers”. The first is a black copper marans/Americauna cross and the second is a barnevelder/americauna cross. They are both about 10-12 weeks old, I think Thank you!

Beginner question... will they proliferate on their own?

Hello, I've been raising chickens for about a year now, and we are thinking of adding a small flock of ducks too! I have a lot of research to do before jumping in, but one question I can't seem to find the answer to on my own, is will they hatch and raise babies on their own without my...

Problem chicken messing with nesting boxes?

I got my first flock of 6 hens about 5 months ago. A few weeks ago they’ve started laying and most have done a pretty good job of laying right in the nesting boxes. My problem is my black Australorp. I have a camera in the coop so I can check in on them occasionally. About a week or two ago I...

How many weeks until first egg?

Oh she's very young still, just 14-15 weeks old. I really thought she had another month at least before her first egg, I was just so surprised to see her comb starting to change already! But I'm still new to all of this, so every little change in my flock is exciting and mystifying haha.

How many weeks until first egg?

Hey, I've been raising my first flock of 6 hens this spring. I went out to check on them today and noticed that in the past day or two my buff's comb and wattles and seemed to grow significantly and gotten much more bright red. I really thought she was quite a few weeks away from her first egg...

Raised coop or coop on the ground? Pros and cons?

Oh and as for those suggesting a combo-purpose structure, I'm a little hesitant to do that here. This silly little village requires a permit even to add a garden shed in your backyard and you have to state it's "purpose". In some places I might be able to get away with it, but this is a veeeery...

Raised coop or coop on the ground? Pros and cons?

Thank you all for your advice! We rescheduled and aren't meeting with Amish until later next week so we have a few more days to figure out plans. As for the strange city rules, it's a very small village and it's been a YEARS long ordeal just to get chickens allowed at all, so at this point I'll...

Raised coop or coop on the ground? Pros and cons?

Hello, this is my first post here, and I'm still learning how to navigate so I apologize if this has already been asked. This spring my husband and I are getting chickens for the very first time and I've been reading along on here trying to gain all the knowledge I can before then. Tomorrow we...
