What to do if you have two Cockerels

I have 2 flock mate Roos, just over a year old now. We started out with 5 but between giving one away, one got killed in the small coop and just free range attrition, we ended up a year later with 2 boys and 3 girls. There is definitely an Alpha and Beta. Obviously 3 hens isn’t enough but the...

    Australorps breed Thread

I think she just itches it because, well the feathers were ...just pulled out. I think that’s the case. I wasn’t able to watch today...had too much going on. It’s not getting worse and the others look fine. She is the favorite hen, and I witnessed the other male peck on her followed by...

Is this a disease, mites or rough mating behavior? Pics included

Ok, good thing is I’ve been watching her now and she does appear to be scratching it. Since I inspected and found nothing do you guys think it could be mites? I didn’t see anything crawling on her but if its the roost mite, potentially I wont see it anyway. It could still be an ear infection...

Or do you guys want me to post this back on the disease page. Y’all were a bit more responsive honestly.

    Australorps breed Thread

Ok, I’ve watched her now and it seems like she’s scratching her head. the bald patches seem (not totally sure) to be getting bigger around her head with some (after watching) now appearing on the back of her head when she preens. Since I inspected and didn’t find a thing, would I even be able...

I’m not concerned but certainly willing to get photos of her to show whoever else is interested what she may be. I’ll have to get back on this one.

Is this a disease, mites or rough mating behavior? Pics included

I’ll be looking that up again, thanks for the link. She actually is our only yellow footed BA. The rest have flesh colored feet. Think that has anything to do with her skin color? I got them all from Hoover Hatchery. She “shouldn’t” be a mix.

    Australorps breed Thread

Well that's nothing life threatening. The disease page just responded and said I may should put iodine on the wart while trying not to disturb it too much. Also said she may be getting plucked as well but he was curious about the yellow skin. This particular bird is a yellow foot bird...the...

    Australorps breed Thread

Is this normal? So I noticed her bald spot yesterday and posted it to the disease page. Not much help. I was able to pick them all up and check them for mites, lice and ticks and found absolutely nothing. There doesn't’ appear to be anything wrong with her ear, but I honestly am not sure...

Is this a disease, mites or rough mating behavior? Pics included

I picked them all up (included curious George the Roo) and inspected them all for mites, lice, ticks and found not one bug. Fairly amazing to me, good groomers I suppose. Her ear doesn’t appear to me affected...is it just a case of another pullet picking out her feathers there during the...

Is this a disease, mites or rough mating behavior? Pics included

Thank you , I was thinking mites or something but then I thought they all would have it. An ear thing is interesting...now I almost hope it’s bugs. Those I can treat. May have to lock up ole Roo to get a good look at everyone.

Is this a disease, mites or rough mating behavior? Pics included

I just noticed these today on her... she’s a 6 month old black Australorp. There seem to be feathers missing by her ear on one side of her face and spots on her comb. They are difficult to see in her photos. Her behavior is normal seemingly...they free range everyday. She’s out pecking with...

    WHY is this so hard?!

Yeah, wow! Where are you! We have raccoons lately and have been hunting them. Also saw some rather large scat that could be bobcat/mountain lion in middle TN. Crazy...and I’m also discouraged at the mere task of just integrating chicks into the larger flock and I’m only a newbie!

    Feathers, disappearing chickens..

I have gone back to the manual setting and feel much better about them being safe. Auto door will only be used when we’re gone for vacations with people to check on them of course. This door is pretty simple, I don’t think he could slide it up because the teeth on the gear go through the door...

    Feathers, disappearing chickens..

The rooster we believe was killed by George. In the small coop “Bigun” just couldn’t get away. He was often challenging George. If I were to have my druthers, he would have been the rooster to keep, he wasn’t quite as audacious as George. Honestly I thought there were going to be problems...

    Feathers, disappearing chickens..

Chicken for dummies (raising and health) indicate that Fox hunt early morning to late evening, and one says one missing bird day = Dog or hawk, and at night = coyote, fox, or owl. It was inside the coop so aerial predators are nixed. My husband followed the trail of feathers up the hill and...

    Feathers, disappearing chickens..

King George is a rooster, and I agree that it’s more humane if I dispose of his lesser pals. Are you saying that because he will kill another male bird of his flock he will also kill a hen? I’m new, but I’ve never read that or heard of it. But I dunno, any one else say the same? I do agree...

    Feathers, disappearing chickens..

It’s wooded and hilly. My husband just told me the trail of feathers led to a piece of “comb” in the creek. He’s out checking the hillside now. I have huge rocks around the bottom and no sign of digging. Raccoons I think used to move those around so I have bigger ones like you see now in the...
