New chicken being bullied by one hen in particular

Thank you - my gut was telling me one of the birds needs to be removed permanently. When either of the birds is not in the flock, everything is peaceful. When the Sumatra is isolated in the pen, everyone is happy except the Sumatra. When I moved the cochin to the Silkie pen (where there is only...

New chicken being bullied by one hen in particular

And the saga continues. I had finally given up and just left the cochin with my ducks, with the intention of trying to re-integrate her into the chicken coop when I had others to go with her. Now I have 3 new pullets, so when I was ready to put them in with the flock I included the cochin. The...

New chicken being bullied by one hen in particular

Interesting approach! I was going to isolate the obvious bully, but your approach never occurred to me and makes sense! Lilly (the Cochin) is absolutely petrified of the bigger chickens, even if they mean no harm and just want to check her out. I put her back with the ducks last night, so maybe...

New chicken being bullied by one hen in particular

My ducks are pretty accepting of everyone so typically I put new chickens in with them. It has worked fine in the past. I haven't had to quarantine because usually I am integrating young ones that I have raised myself from chicks so I know they are healthy. This is the first time I integrate one...

New chicken being bullied by one hen in particular

I have a mixed breed flock of about 10. I recently added a bantam Cochin, but my black Sumatra (who is also fairly new to the flock) picks on her mercilessly to the point that the Cochin won't leave the coop. I know some of this is normal, I'm just wondering how long I let it keep up before I...

    Help sexing my silkie chick

I'm just getting started with silkies myself but from what I understand from talking to people, including breeders, is they are very difficult to accurately sex unless you DNA. You can't really tell by looks until they are months old, or if they start laying or crowing (which isn't 100% either...

    Chicken Breed Focus - Silkie

I have 2 silkies that were sold to me as hens (supposedly confirmed via dna) but I’m wondering if my black one is actually a roo. The crest feathers look very different than the other one and I swear this morning it was trying to make a crowing sound in answer to my other silkie roo. This one as...

    Muscovy drake getting aggressive?

Thanks everyone! I have started taking a broom in with me and when I do this he stays a respectful distance away. I guess he did try to rush at my daughter but she pinned him and now he seems to give more thought as to who he is asserting himself too :-) Here is a photo of my flock. Mr Man is...

    rats!lots

I found a flat, mangled rat in my duck pen yesterday! And I have watched my Roo take on mice and squirrels. Can’t do much about them getting in during the day but if you don’t leave food in the coop overnight the critters will quickly move in.

    Muscovy drake getting aggressive?

I have a pair of Muscovy ducks - they are siblings and I got them as ducklings. I thought they were both females, but one has gotten considerably larger than the other and I am thinking that one is definitely a drake. I know their method of communication is mainly hissing, but I just read on...

So excited to have found these forums!

Hi, I'm Sue and am extremely excited to have found this site so thank you for the add! I am in southeastern NH, about 45 minutes from the coast. We have a small farm with 2 dogs, 2 barn cats, 3 horses and the chickens. I became new to chickens in April 2018 when my daughter moved back into our...
