I had one other hen the other day making a funny chirping noise, but she stopped, otherwise nothing weird I've noticed. My roo is pretty docile, I haven't ever seen him be rough, but I'm not out there all the time. She's stopped twitching, just sleeping now. She's a barred rock, born April '10.
I feel confident her back isn't broken. I've brought her in the house so she can be warm and put her in a box with a cover. When I sat her down, she moved herself a bit. I gave her a little bit of water but she wouldn't even swallow, it just ran back out of her mouth The twitching almost...
Also, they've hardly been laying at all - I think they were molting. I upped their protein hoping that would help. I put them on a game bird feed but they don't seem to like it much, I was going to switch them back to the regular layer feed.
I have a flock of 16 hens, one rooster. Most of the chicikens are 1.5 years old, and 2 are 2.5 years old. They were treated for coccidiosis at about 4-6 months
I'm in Missouri and it's very cold here right now (freezing temps but no snow).
Chickens were out today, and I did not check in the...
Thanks all for your help. Trying not to humanize them too much, but they did look quite offended they were all wet.
I went out and checked them again, and they seem to be slowly drying. Our lamp was still installed from this winter so we turned it on (it's secured very well) and we plugged...
It's pouring rain this evening, and when my husband went out to put the chickens in, their door had blown shut so they couldn't get inside to get dry. They were so soaking wet they couldn't get up on the roosts. I feel bad, but I don't peek out the door every 10 min to check on them.
Anyway...
Thank you all for your help! I love the idea of walking around and making him miserable for a while. He's a real pain in the patootie. Very beautiful though! Every time I get a pretty one, they seem to turn out to be a big turd. Looks like he's gonna be dinner soon, and Rufus (the good...
I have 19 hens and 2 roosters.
One rooster is really a good rooster, I've never seen him be mean, he'll let us feed him from our hand, etc. The second rooster has become a real PITA!!! He rushed me last fall and pecked me HARD on the back of my bare leg. I was carrying food (a pumpkin) and...
sorry I didn't get back sooner!
My sister got the chicken from Orschlens, which gets their chickens from Estes hatchery.
I figured out it is definitely a hen! I was getting ONE random white egg, and suspected it was her since there are no other white layers, and she's the "different" bird...
Lil' white chicken came from my sister's house. Is it a California White? It's kinda small-ish.
HOWEVER, check out that comb, it's getting really big really fast.. which makes me wonder, is LWC with a big attitude possibly a rooster? Oy-vey.
You could be more passive, and have more of a greenhouse effect by putting in glass. Our coop has a full view glass storm door (lets in tons of light), and two 2'x2' windows. I'm hoping that this, and lots of litter will keep them warm enough this winter.
I have a roo that we've taken a liking to. He's a RIR that is 17 weeks old (almost all of the 25 are around this age - we have 6 roosters, and a few are ready for freezer camp soon). He's very friendly to PEOPLE. He comes up and begs for food and when all the other chickens are running away...
Hubs says that you can't eat the eggs at first after you give them egg start (like when you give them medicated food).
I however, have no idea since as I clarified, I'm a big fat noob. LOL.
I'm confused. My husband used to have chickens in a past life, and he said you have to feed egg start to get them going. But i get the impression from some posts, they just start laying on their own when they are ready. Which is best?
