OK, so Mr Pigeon wriggled out of his sling twice - the mischievous thing. So I gave up on it and went to put him back in the box and... I don't know whether he did it because he was just annoyed but... He stood up! I've also managed to contact a local "Animal Ambulance" charity, run by this...
So I've done my best with the sling... It's essentially a tailored sock suspended from the lid of the cat carrier. How is my setup looking? I was unsure how close the water needed to be. I'm going to add his food bowl back in there too. It's hard to tell through the side of the cat carrier, but...
Thank you so much and I'm sure Mr Pigeon appreciates it too :)
A few comments down on that thread someone mentioned a thigh fracture which makes the bird's good leg sympathetically weak and the bird behaves as if both legs are too weak to stand. Sounds very familiar... I'm hoping a sling might...
Day 3 and Mr Pigeon is still alive! He had another foot bath last night and a really good sip of water. I'm going to try and put him in a sling when I get home from work; get the weight off his legs and see how he does. Wish me luck! Thank you everyone for your fantastic support by the way :)
Yeah I'm a bit bemused too... Because if it was just his poorly ankle giving him grief then he would stand on his other leg wouldn't he? But he just sort of tips over like in the video. I read that the motor nerves for pigeon's legs run through/past their kidneys. So if there is any abdominal...
Not really, no. He sort of sips at it but I can't tell if anything is actually going in or not. I gave him a little water this morning via syringe but nothing since then, unless he's drinking when I'm not looking. He does move around in the cage a bit so I did wonder if he was trying to get to...
@biophiliac @CCUK
Here is a video of him not able to stand on his own. He just leans against the side of the carrier or flops down as he does towards the end of the video.
On a lighter note - he ate something! :)
It is poop, yes. He's not very mobile so has a habit of messing on himself and rolling through it. I'm changing his bedding twice a day and I bathed his feet in warm water yesterday in an attempt to get some of it off. But not knowing his injuries, I didn't want to be any more vigorous. I will...
I'm just softening some pigeon mix in warm water, so when I go in to coax him with food I'll try and get a video of him falling over. It's difficult because I need one hand on the pigeon and one hand to film, but if I set him down he might try and flap away and land on his face again. I'll do my...
After a second look at those images... what do you think of his right ankle? His right foot seems to turn inwards slightly compared to his left foot which is in line with his leg. There's also that reddish mark on his right ankle that someone mentioned...
@CCUK and @biophiliac I took a video of his legs before I realised I can't upload it here, so there are some screen grabs I've attached. When I picked him up he was pedalling both legs and his toes are nice and outstretched. I can't see any obvious injury, so I'm hoping it's as you say and...
Good morning lovely, helpful people!
You'll be pleased to know that Mr/Mrs Pigeon survived the night. He/she is a lot more active today, I can hear it flapping about inside the cat carrier trying to move itself around. Still no ability to bare weight on the legs though. His/her feet and ankles...
