If you're worried your kids might spook them, they might IF they're loud. I used to keep quail in my basement rec room where I'd often listen to music and stuff and come and go all day. The quail never really seemed disturbed by this and layed very nicely.
I think a quail enclosure in a...
Quails are not poultry according to my local township when I checked. But that is PURLEY a matter of how they decided to define it themselves.
In most places I've checked in Canada, they fall under "Livestock" and typically aren't listed at all, and fall into a grey area... When i got quail i...
It really depends on a lot of factors. 2-3 sqft of room per bird is more for chickens. Its been my understanding that quail can be adequately housed in enclosures that provide at ABSOLUTE minimum 8inches per bird (This generally is for raising to 8 weeks before butchering or if you have a small...
My biggest concern with mice or rats in the barns/coops is the spread of illness. I would try to set a live trap for him. The kind that has the pressure plate that closes the door behind the rodent. They make very small ones for mice that shouldn't be too intrusive to the coop.
How you want to...
yep, completely normal. Just let them settle in and they'll all be laying soon.
I hope you have plans for the eggs! I've had that many layers in the past, and you run out of places to stash them. lol
All I can say is WOW. What a terrific idea to reuse an item that does eventually become unsafe for kids to be playing on. Much better then tossing it as scrap metal or taking it to a dump.
My mother was very happy to sprout 6 moringa seeds this past spring. She would spend hours raving on about the health benefits. There certainly are some! And I don't believe it posh to assume at least some of these health benefits would be felt by the quails eating it.
I've attached a small...
Welcome to team Quail!
I live off grid, and personally I'd say your most dependable light would be one that is hooked up to a real solar setup (Even a very small one) with a separate deep cycle battery to recharge/power the light(s).
Of course, it is the more expensive option, (even when...
Some great answers here already, but I'll add my 0.00002 cents as well I guess. Lol
The great thing about quail that I've come to love; They're pretty dependable egg layers.
If you're looking for 5eggs a day, you technically would only need 5 healthy, happy quails with some good comfortable...
Temps certainly have been colder here in Southern Ontario! As well, the days have been much shorter. I notice my girls are still laying though, too!
What I've been doing (as I didn't plan to have eggs this time of year anyways) since they won't seem to stop, is feed the eggs right back to them...
I had a brood 2 years ago and one of the males suffered a similar injury. (Being attacked by the other male)
After cleaning the wound and keeping him separate for about 3 weeks until he was mostly healed, I thought he'd be good to go. Days after rejoining his covey, he was attacked...
Birds are a lot more resilient than people usually give them credit for. Your coop looks like it should keep the drafts out, and the weather. Which is perfect. However, as mentioned; You're gunna want to make sure there is adequate ventilation. Pneumonia and other breathing sicknesses are the...
This is pretty good advice, although I'll add that you don't want ANY of the soap getting into the wound. Just wash around it and pat dry when finished.
Wishing you and your flock the best!
It was my understanding that coturnix quail very solemnly go broody. (Hence my crazy off grid incubator for quail eggs, haha!)
This is amazing to hear! they must be very comfortable! i would recommend disturbing them as little as possible! Good luck! Hoping for good results for you!
Do you...
Thanks! I hope to get it figured out easy and cost effectively enough so that it could be viable for anyone! Especially those who are in unique situations. So far the diesel heater itself is the most costly part, and i hope to keep it that way. lol That being said, for some; These diesel heaters...
Temperature consistency really is the name of the game. Im sure that this system will be able to heat the small area to or above the Hatching* temps. The next trick is balancing it out.
I imagine it was quite hard trying to balance your system without the use of thermometers!
Kusanar mentioned...
My thought exactly! Check out that oil lamp heater I mentioned earlier. Astonishing technology. I assume the ancients used something similar.
Here's the diagram hopefully.
Whoops! thank for pointing that out! ill try a reupload right now!
Wow this stuff sounds amazing for any indoor application! especially for this system! (where everything will be kept closed as often as possible to conserve heat).
Very specific indeed! in the rough draft diagram I'm about to...
Here's a bit of a rough sketch idea I was able to get drawn up.
I think in theory it should work, it would just be a pain to keep that temperature in the sweet zone.
Very interested in this de-stinking Medium for the brooder. Anything that keeps the odors down is a huge bonus. Thanks!
