Insects Around The Eye Advice Appreciated

Thank you so much everyone for your replies. Much appreciated. Love this site. Yes I am in Australia (South Coast WA) I rang the local stock food supplies who deal with poultry supplies and they said the same thing as you have said. They also a lot of local chicken owners are suffering at...

Insects Around The Eye Advice Appreciated

My young 3 month old Pekin Bantam has suddenly attracted some caviar looking black insects. I tried to wipe them off with a cotton bud but not much came off. Does anyone know what they are and how to treat them? Thank you.

    Quail Questions. All ideas appreciated.

Thanks for the replies. I have been giving her a break for a few hours but it often seems to upset both of them. Today as per Patio...'s suggestion, I separated them with some doubled over chicken wire. They both spent the first five minutes trying to get to each other, jumping into the wire...

    Quail Questions. All ideas appreciated.

Hi, I recently obtained a couple of unsexed young quail. They have now shown their gender with one male and one female - hopefully not brother and sister. They have an 8m2 run under the tomato plants and seem happy. However I am wondering if my thinking matches what other (more...

Hatching and raising Cali Quail with a Bantam chook

I enjoyed this read. I have my first quail and some very young pekin bantams. They share a divided yard and seem to get along well. I suspect the male quail is more curious about the little hens than the female quail. I'd like to try to put them together but I am not sure if it is wise. I...

Comment by 'Couchie' in article 'Humane Quail Care'

I totally agree. I am astounded what is considered 'free-range' in the chicken industry. Although much better than caged egg chickens, the amount per square metre is too small in my mind. I have recently obtained quail for the first time and have come back to BYC to ask a question so I am far...

    What's happening here?

Thanks for your reply. The bottom has been without feathers for a long time. How long I am not sure. She is the biggest and bossiest of the girls so it has not been pecked by others. She eats a variety of diet; usually oats in the morning and poultry seed mix in the evening. During the...

    What's happening here?

I have an (what I think is) Orpington Pekin Bantam cross that I have raised since the egg. Her bottom has looked like this for a while, and I am wondering if it is a concern. Does anyone have an opinion? She lays well and seems happy enough. However, sometimes her poo gets stuck around her...

    Magpies swooping and attacking chickens.

We have the same problem here at the moment. I think I will move them into the yard we have a net over. I netted a smaller yard to discourage pigeons (worked a bit) but it might give the chickens some rest until the swooping season calms down. Thanks again BackYard Chickens for some ideas.

    Rooster neck feathers missing

thanks Perris for your thoughts. Besides being a bit lonely because I have locked him in another yard so he doesn't harass the girls, he seems well enough. I am now searching for someone to take him because I am not allowed to have a rooster in suburbia. Anyone want a pekin bantam rooster? I...

    Rooster neck feathers missing

Hello wonderful backyard chicken people. I have a young pekin bantam rooster. He has been crowing for about 3 weeks now. About two weeks ago he got a little too enthusiastic for the girls so I put him in another yard by himself. It was a veggie patch until recently so he had plenty of great...

    Sunflower Seed Processing.

that had crossed my mind too Silexian. Just because they look similar doesnt mean they're the same. It would be hard for the Pekin Bantams to get to them but we offered them one a few weeks ago and they weren't keen. Plus I think it is the same variety as last year and they weren't...

    Sunflower Seed Processing.

Hi my favourite chook site. In the chicken mix that I buy to go along with free range foraging, the black sunflower seeds are eaten first. For a few years I've grown sunflowers that produce black sunflower seeds. However, the chooks don't like my homegrown seeds. Does anyone know why...
