Wyandotte breed predisposed to Heart Attack?

Hello, We started with 4 silver-laced Wyandotte and 14 Easter egger chicks last March. (The Wyandottes were from Tractor Supply and the Easter eggers were from Tractor Supply and Rainbow Ag.) We lost a Wyandotte mysteriously, suddenly, at 6 months. We didn't see it happen, and only discovered...

Designer Coops - Only in LA

Yes, I like designing and building things, too. The chickens needs are very basic... shelter, ventilation, safety. Most coop features are more for our own use, comfort and amusement than for the chickens! :lau

Designer Coops - Only in LA

And from another perspective entirely, I live in a rural area, on 180 acres, at the top of a ridge, where our nearest neighbor is a 30 minute hike away. The only people who see our coop are my man & I, plus any family or company we have visiting us. And yet, I would consider our 8' x 12' coop...

    New pullets, night lights advice?

Well, I guess I should have said "relatively" secure! We live out in the country and have a lot of predators, including black bears, coyotes, foxes and weasels. We hope the run is secure against flying, digging and climbing predators, but would rather not put it to the test at night. The coop...

    New pullets, night lights advice?

I was just noting the temperature because someone said chickens need light to eat more if they are in a cold climate. :-)

    New pullets, night lights advice?

Does anyone have an auto chicken door that they get to open when it is still dark so their chickens can go to an enclosed, secure lighted run? Like, have a light on a timer outside in the run, over the auto door, that turns on at 6:00 AM so the sensor on the auto door thinks it's daylight and...

Review by 'Kee11' in article 'Going Mobile: For the Love of Chickens'

What a cute design! The upbeat colors look fresh and happy, and make my think of fruit... bananas, pineapple, lemon zest, lol. How about naming it "The Pineapple Express", since it moves? Great article, thanks for sharing with us. :-)

Is deer fence adequate daytime protection?

Yep, that's my thinking, too. My boyfriend thinks it's an unnecessary expense for daytime protection... I guess time will tell. :-(

Is deer fence adequate daytime protection?

Yes, I would like to have electric fence, but we are starting fresh this year after the entire remote property burned... house, outbuildings, trees, everything, in the October 2017 wildfires, and now my boyfriend is against anything electric that could possibly come in contact with the...

Is deer fence adequate daytime protection?

No, it is the black nylon kind... the heavier, larger-holed deer fence (on the side wall of run) comes in 7' x 100' rolls, and the smaller-holed deer fence (used for top covering) also comes in 7' x 100' rolls, but it is folded in half, so the roll is only 3.5' long.
