    Good heat tolerant broody hens??

As it turns out, Wyandotte’s and Orpingtons were both on my list and our TSC has them both already sexed. Yay for saving $20+ on shipping.

    Good heat tolerant broody hens??

Mornin all! DH and I incubated and hatched 18 chicks in May. Out of the 18, 15 are left. 7 Barred Rocks and 8 EEers. 6 of those barred rocks are Roos. ‍♀️ We aren’t sure about the EEers yet. We will be getting rid of 5 of the Roos. But we do want to add some chicks. Because of the gross...

    Rabbit hutch to brooder box?

Definitely adding perches :) I’m using one of those square mama plates. (That’s what I call them, anyway) And yes! Definitely adding something to try to keep the shavings contained. I’ve debated using sand as well, but that would need a boarder too

    Rabbit hutch to brooder box?

We will be putting our eggs in the incubator this week, and in the meantime I’m working on the brooder box. I want it to be inside, raised off the ground and somewhat open so we can look directly in while we are sitting on the couch. Plus I want my German Shepherd to get used to the babies (but...

Has anyone ordered hatching eggs from Valley Farms Hatchery (cross posted)

I read great reviews from people ordering chicks from Valley Farms Hatchery. I saw they started shipping fertilized eggs so I thought I would order some and get the whole experience. So this morning I got a shipping notification, and replied asking if there was a tracking number so I could...

What an amazing story (and so well written) I have goosebumps and tears. And the coop is gorgeous and sure to be a treasure. For so many reasons.

Looking for ideas for brooder to reuse in the coop

I’ll change that, thanks! Yes to the eggs and incubator. Well, I will have the eggs in a few weeks. No to having a coop currently, we are going to start building that this weekend, which is why I’m looking for a way to work a reusable brooder into it. But, until I get to updating location...

Looking for ideas for brooder to reuse in the coop

Hubs and I are expecting 24 eggs at the end of April. I’m planning now what kind of brooder to build, and I have some ideas. But since (ahem...as of now) we are only planning to do this once, I want the brooding pen/cage to be something we can reuse in the coop somehow, possibly to divide into...

Has anyone tried the Little Giant Incubators?

Easter Eggers and Barred Rock. I see a lot of people complaining about the turners. We actually plan to do that manually, so hopefully it won’t be an issue for us

Has anyone tried the Little Giant Incubators?

I’m glad y’all have posted this. DH and I are looking at incubators and since we only *plan* to do this once, we didn’t want to spend a lot. This is just what we are looking for!

    Hatching vs purchasing chicks

I wasn’t able to find any local hatcheries (other than “Pilgrims Pride hatchery” and that defeats the purpose of live chickens LOL) so I ordered from one in Tennessee. And they were able to send me hatching eggs from the 2 specific breeds I want. My husband is excited about DIYing an incubator...

    South Carolina

Hey everyone! New here, new to chicken raising and new to (attempted) homesteading. But I’ve lived in SC for 7 years. I’m in Manning, which is pretty much smack dab in the middle of the state. Any recommendations for places to buy Easter eggers or barred rock chicks or hatching eggs?

    Hatching vs purchasing chicks

That’s another post. I’d like ideas. I’m not a fan of “getting rid” of them, but I do know it’s an option.

I actually googled something to the effect of dog crate brooders. I think
