Three days ago I gave the hens a quick look, counted them and locked the coop door.
Next morning my kids open the coop door.
Late in the day I was told that the Sussex was missing, we looked everywhere without success. Today I found her dead in a corner inside the coop behind the closed bucket...
I was accustomed to having 4-5 eggs per day from my five pullets. A month ago my feed supplier was out of my usual chicken feed so I had to buy a 16% protein feed. I had to go out of town for two weeks, when I got back I started to usually get only two eggs per day. In the past two days I have...
Over the past two weeks I have found a broken egg below the roosting bar.
1) is this due to a health problem ?
2) should I reposition the poop tray under the roosting bar to be 4-6 inches below the bar ?
My hens, (3 BO, 1 EE, 1 SS)are behaving odd and I do not understand it. Three are 14 month old, the others under a year.
Up to about 8 weeks ago they would wait their turn and lay in only one of the two nesting boxes. They then started using both boxes. Few weeks ago I started seeing two using...
I have three BO, one SS, and one EE.
They give us the eggs shown on the picture.
We have ample space so want to bring in two more chicks and add egg color variety.
What do you suggest ?
Year old BO was in nesting box for 6 hours so I grabbed her and put her on the floor multiple times. She looked very wide, was making Quiet kuk kuk sound and hopped backed in the nesting box. Took her out again and placed two gallon size buckets in both nesting boxes, she kept trying to wedge...
Locked the door to the coop at 9:00 last night, as always carefully check the coop for any snake, rodents, etc that might have entered it so looked in the nesting boxes, roof, walls, etc and all looked ok.
Today at 10 am I looked in the nesting boxes and brought out 3 eggs which we had for...
Have had two nesting boxes for a while and it’s worked fine. Now For some reason multiple pullets want to use the Boxes at the same time, there is lots of hissing going on until one shares a box
I have 5 laying pullets, each lays 6 times per week and am thinking of bringing in two more girls...
I am in south Florida, heat is an issue so I have my open coop covered by a mango tree on one side and by 20 foot high bananas plants on the other side.
It’s worked great for a year but now black Mold is appearing in one of the nesting boxes.
Should I,
A) do nothing.
B) clean it with bleach...
Got to the coop later than usual to shut the door and found this little guy.
Got him out but wondering if 1/2” hardware cloth can keep out an adult possum.
Around seven days ago small soft feathers began to show up in the nesting boxes. Also noticed small loose feathers on the the rear (vent area) of my pullets.
They are still laying eggs consistently.
is this the beginning of molting ?
Do flocks tend to go through it at one time ?
How long does...
Last week one of my BO began laying dark brown eggs once-twice per week, on her other days The eggs are beige. I assume they are perfectly fine but wondering what explains the dark brown shells.
Up to last week my pullets drank water from bowls, now they are drinking from vertical nipples. The eggs seem by eyesight to be smaller. Have others noticed the same and is it due to them drinking less water ?
My five pullets are all laying which I assume raises their water intake compare to before they started laying. I am having to refill the two water bowls two to three times per day.
Having to refill bowls that often concerns me so am looking for larger bowls or another way to keep water always...
Boiled eggs tonight to have with smoked salmon and one of the egg shells developed multiple dark spots about 1/8” , what would explain it ?
The eggs are from Buff Orpington’s and the spots where not there before boiling.
Five pullets, six to ten months old.
Diet has consisted of crumble, fallen fruits and typical free ranging scavenging.
Last bag of crumble lasted seven weeks.
Yesterday I switch them to Nutrina All Flock pellets . Usually I topped off the feeding station once a day, today I had to fill it twice...
Have had my chickens around 9 months. One began laying 10 weeks ago and two around 10 days ago. Two will hopefully begin laying in around one month.
The pullets are free ranging in an area approximately 90x45 feet.
Feed, all flock, is always available.
They have an area to dust bath.
Around ten...
My last two laying pullets keep making a perfectly round nest without any hay in the center. A few eggs have cracked. Has anybody tried placing cardboard as a nesting box shock absorber ?
Few days ago I tried to spot a bird which was singing a beautiful bird song. Looked for a while without success, figured it must be hidden in one our trees.
Today while collecting eggs I heard the same song and noticed that it was coming from my 8 month old Buff Orpington which began laying...
