#1 - I raised my baby chicks (30!) in my kitchen -- TWICE! You would have thought I learned from the first time around how dusty and messy they can be. So glad when I got them out of the house. Couldn't stop cleaning, cleaning, cleaning.
#2 - How persistent predators can be. From time to time...
A question along the same lines: I usually leave mine on the counter until I have a full 12 then into the frig they go. This usually takes 3 to 4 days to collect 12. Today I took my dozen with me to pass on to an egg loving buddy. Unfortunately I had to leave them in the car for about 5 hours...
Hi Sherry!
That’s great! I’ve been awash in eggs lately – gave away 2 dozen – not including what I gave you – then made lemon curd (uses 8 eggs!). I’ll start saving them for you now, starting with 2 blue ones from yesterday.
I’ve been scrolling around this site too, looking for how to keep...
How are things going? You have a couple weeks, no, before you candle them? How many batches do you have incubating?
Just to let you know my white Ameraucanas are beginning to lay -- small, blue eggs -- Daddy is the black Araucana. Both are gentle, sweet birds. Daddy, too. Might be nice to see...
Ok, here's the "Crow-off" -- hope this works!
No bloodshed as I had to break things up at the end. Watch the duck -- he is protective of Blackie and during the summer chases the Marans all over the place. The battle continued after I got the Marans back in the dog crate, with Jack, the duck...
I took more pictures this morning when I did my chores. Man, is it C O L D out there!!!!
It will take me awhile to figure how, but I'll load them here when I do.

What was I THINKING!! What I meant to write:
The real dark eggs are from the MARANS hens. . . The MARANS are laying well right now.
Daddy IS a black Araucana.
Sorry, and I'll try to load the video!

What a great chart! Thanks for the link. I have a Silkie in my kitchen for 3 days that I "rescued" from a neighbors collection of birds. It looked like it was on death's door in some of the worst of our bitter cold up here. She has revived and is quite sweet. (In fact, she's sitting on my lap...
Thanks for stating this much better than I did!
sasimpson77 did you catch this? The real dark eggs I gave you are from the Americana hens. Lighter ones are from Red Sex Links. The Americanas are laying well right now so most of the eggs are from them. Hens are all gray. Daddy is all black with...
He's all black and I got him from a breeder in southern Illinois near Carbondale. No way would I give him up, he's a real sweetie. Might trade my Marans rooster for an Araucana pullet though! But he is mean as all hell -- you might not want him!
I have quite a few eggs right now, mostly from the Marans hens. Trouble is the daddy is an Araucana which if you look this up online, is said to carry a "death gene". If I understand this correctly, it means high mortality for the eggs and/or chicks. I had a friend incubate my eggs about a...
I have a small flock and they are all housed together so, no, they would not be pure bred except possibly the Marans. I'm just south of Rochelle IL along Rte 39.
I have fertile eggs I can share. Perhaps we can meet depending on where you are in Illinois. I have 2 roosters, an Araucana and a Marans (who is in jail right now). There is a poultry show/swap in Waterloo IA in March, another near St. Louis which is too far for me.
Good luck!
Still looking for Marans? Pretty cold out there now, but you might contact me in a couple months when it warms up. I have a gorgeous Silver Splash Marans rooster that might end up in the freezer. I would prefer to keep him if I can figure out how to handle his behavior. Let me know if you are...
Lots of good advice -- thank you! I've been scrolling around other threads and found this:
Generally, two or more roosters will only get along with each other if they have been raised together (same age), and are not near hens. If there are hens in the picture, the roos will fight each other...
I have a mixed flock too. The older hens are 3 or 4 years old with some youngsters (Marans) I raised last year. No problem with the hens, but the roosters? Another story altogether!
