I'm planning to order a set of 8 or so chicks soon. I live in NH and would like, of course, a short shipping time, and healthy chicks.
I'd like a hatchery which supports mixed breeds, as well, if possible. I'm currently looking at Meyer and Cackle Hatcheries, but if anyone has any other...
My chickens are all too stupid to use nipples - it's possible I haven't waited long enough for them to figure it out, but they just suffer and dehydrate. They're also too dumb to figure out the cup-nipple things with the yellow filler-dongle. It's sad.
But really, I'm just coming here to say...
Two months ago, my pullet Enid suffered a hawk strike. She survived but with long-term injuries - there's something wonky about her leg, so she's slightly unsteady on her feet.
However, her neck is also twisted. It wasn't just after the strike, and after a bit of investigation, I figured that...
I wanted to enter - I even tried to get my hen, Parm, to run through a routine. But she's been kept inside for the past couple of weeks and the excitement of being outdoors and able to scratch around in the leaves was too much for her and she couldn't concentrate.
She even ignored grapes, which...
Well. Enid is doing okay back in the coop. I think she's sleeping in one of the low nest boxes, but that's fine, since the sleeping arrangements for the main flock are pretty high up.
She's being picked on, but she's still getting about. When she hangs out with the three she was raised with...
I worry as well but I've seen many things that say putting them together at night, when they're sleepy and disoriented is the best way. That they assume anyone who wakes up with them has been there all along.
I will, of course, report back.
I put Enid back into the coop with the rest of the flock tonight. She's walking well, if still not perfectly evenly, and I'm concerned about keeping her away from the others too long.
Her feet are definitely crossed over and she doesn't stand quite upright anymore, but she's ready to go out, I...
When we built the coop, we insulated it like a house (R19 between the exterior walls and the interior plywood, and rockwool under the floor), and I use deep litter (mostly for the ease of maintenance). I use a heated water container and have a cozy coop heater on a device which only lets it turn...
Well. She's walking, but not quite steadily. I'm keeping her in for another couple of days, until she's firmer and she'll be able to navigate the coop.
Her right leg, the sore one, seems to be crossing over a bit, but I think it'll be okay in the end.
I mean, I could use staples or something (I kid, I kid).
She spent the time I was out snacking on lettuce and chopped tomato. (There were, of course, chick kibble and water as well, but who cares about them when you can have curly lettuce?)
@Lights - those black and white chickens are beautiful, omgOSH!!! :love
I think I'll be ordering some netting from ebay and setting it up on 6' poles. What fun.
@Sally PB - thanks for your comment about my run. It always looks so, uh, 'natural', when compared to the fancy things other people have, but my chickens love it, which is what matters. I like that they have lots of room to play. It had grass, originally, but they fixed that. ;)
It's a huge hassle to move the electric fencing, but since I'd be leaving the netting up for the lifetime of the chickens, I might as well just set up the netting on the whole run anyway. I see poultry netting and 6' poles in my future!
And yeah, the stone walls are quite nice. They came with...
@WindingRoad - thank you! I'm glad your leghorn got better. I'm hoping Enid does - she's already a bit better. I might build her a low roost for her first few weeks in the main coop, but that'll be next week, probably.
I hadn't thought about giving her baby aspirin. While I'm out tomorrow, I'll...
That's a good idea - I've got enough random pieces of cloth to tie her up eight ways to Sunday, so...
She's easy to be nice to - of that group of four chicks, she's always liked cuddling and attention. She'd be happy now if I just carried her around all day, like a weird, loud football.
I'd already strapped cloth over her back and pinned it down with clamps. She slithered out from under that and out from the leg-holes of the sling. I think she's just mis-named and she should be Houdini.
Tomorrow, when I get back home, I'll bring the sling upstairs to my office so she can hang...
I'll be strapping her back into her sling, but she'd escaped (again) and I'm clearly going to have to re-think how I'm keeping her in it. I have to be out some of tomorrow, so I'm thinking of letting her stay in the bedding-lined bin until I get back home, even though it'll give her the chance...
