I was told production red, but I can't really find pictures of other reds with the same color.
She is going to start laying any day now, I got her yesterday so I don't have any info about her as a chick other than she came from the hardware store.
I can say she is sassy and loud.
My flock went from 3 to 1 due to a dog. The local hardware stores dont have chicks and I cant really order online(cant meet their min order size). How long can my one buff orp be the lone flock member without having negative effects?
I built Rose(injured hen) a smaller enclosure for the garage I could move that inside their run area. Think she would be okay in the cooler temps while recovering? She is completely immobile at the moment and pretty much just sleeps 24/7.
We had a dog attack that took one and severely injured another who will likely be in the garage an extended amount of time. This leaves just one chicken in the yard doing her thing. Will she be okay for a month or two alone? Should I do something to help the injured chicken deal with being...
Update: Rose is resting it seems okay, she talks to me softly when I go out and see her. It has been getting down into the low 30s at night so I've kept her heat lamp on so she is more comfortable and can save her energy for healing. On monday I plan to get her out and do more inspection of her...
Update: Moved her to the garage into a crate about an hour ago and added the brooder heatlamp up away from the crate a bit just to help raise the temp a bit. She has started standing up and was cooing at me when I checked on her just now. Good signs I reckon.
Additional info, she is alert and resting in her coop with my other hen that doesn't appear to be too off(a couple feathers are ruffled where one of the dogs tried to pick her up).
Should I add some heat to help her be comfortable with it being cold right now or just let her rest?
This morning my hens decided to explore into the neighbor's yard and were attacked by dogs. 1 was dead when I came out to do my midmorning pettings. My RIR was down with one of the dogs trying to get her open when I was able to get it off her with a hoe.
I got her back into my yard and she is...
My RIR started laying pretty frequently she would normally do 3 on 1 off. For about two weeks. Then we had a front come through and it got down into the low 30s and rained for a few days. Since that point she has completely stopped laying. This is her first year laying(hatched mid April).
I'm...
Update, since its been so long, sorry! Life gets busy with 4 kids in addition to the chickens!
I've moved the coop to a better spot in the yard than right as you walk outside, my wife appreciates it.
We sent two of the cockerels to a family member who needed roosters for his flock and we...
