I guess I don't really have a question, more of a rant. After a long, complicated story, I picked up a dozen chicks that I was owed for the last month. I got them home and took them out of the carrier and immediately noticed that all of them were sick with some upper respiratory thing. Eyes...
I just put a dozen eggs into lockdown this morning. Before I did, I candled them, and noted, as I had twice before when candling this group, that two of the eggs are much less developed than the others. I distinctly saw movement in both of them this morning, so I left them, but what should I...
In my dreams, I will soon purchase a cabinet incubator, but have a question for those who own one. The GQF advises you can have a "continual hatch" by starting a new tray of eggs weekly, and rotating the oldest eggs into the brooder box on the lowest shelf. I just wonder about the humidity...
So, I set a bunch of eggs a couple weeks ago - out of 13 eggs, only 4 are set to hatch. However, even though they are all the same breed, two of the eggs are far more developed, and yet the other two clearly have life, moving chicks in there. To top it off, because I legitimately didn't think...
Has anyone ever had a bird with malpositioned alular quills? I have a couple chicks sporting somewhat elongated, fleshy alulars, and the feathers jut out from the body kind of like angel wings. I can find nothing about this in the literature.
I have 9 straight run chicks available in Wagener, SC. Hatched on Oct 10. They should lay a light blue egg. $5 each or take all for $40. PM if interested.
Just wondering if anyone has ever used grooming chalk to whiten up birds for shows? This is used regularly for showing dogs, and theoretically, it is removed from the coat before entering the ring.
Just curious if any one has tried it on a chicken?
5 week old Jersey Giant chick - I noticed about 2 days ago that she has a significant curvature of her neck. Though a clutch mate DID have a nutritional deficiency of some sort last week, I don't believe this is why neck - she has NO other deficiency or symptoms, eats and ambulates just fine...
I have a 4 week old chick who became lame on first her right leg, then her left, to a lesser degree her left, and right along has had a poor appetite, but has been growing normally (in fact is one of the bigger chicks). Her siblings are a very active and robust bunch. I first became concerned...
Hi - wondering if anyone can offer any insight here. I have a flock of cochins ranging in age from 11 - 15 weeks. These have been very robust chicks. They were moved outside to the main coop about 3 weeks ago. They were started on layer feed last week.
This morning, my husband went out and...
19 week old pair of brahmas I got the other day. Supposed to be a hen and a roo, but the more I look, the less I think this is a rooster. No saddle, sickle or hackle feathers, zero spur development, not crowing, and the only difference between this bird and the hen is comb/wattle development...
Yes, I know.... hatched around 6/13. I purchased 5 from a breeder. I lost two. This one has always been different from the others. Grayer and smaller, and now with the crest. Not really upset about it. Crap happens. I would like to know if she's a mix or a cream legbar, as among others...
Just curious, with standard breeds, in particular cochins and brahmas, if all other things are equal, is the larger bird preferred? Is there a point where they can be too big?
This is an approx 14 week old bird I acquired as a "leghorn" from my local feed store as a 4-6 week old chick. Any guesses as to sex and breed? We also got 4 matching Hens, but this one was very quick to develop a rich red chest. Even though s/he was the smallest, its wattle and comb...
