Yes, one is on a hay bale so appears larger. The one with the most developed comb is also the largest and I don't think it's a cockerel - no spurs. The others are close though. They are all the same age - about 14 weeks. They all came from the same brood.
As you can see in this image, the center hen in front has a much more developed comb and wattles. This picture doesn't show it very well but hers are much deeper red and much more fully developed than the others. I have five of these girls (one is off camera) - Black Australorpes - and I got...
The main reason I don't put them out now is the weather. It still dips well below freezing at night and we have such high winds right now the little pullets couldn't handle it. I do have a place they can shelter when I set up their corral. And there are plenty of hiding places. You don't see my...
I have a small flock now which consists of three hens and a roo. The hens are two easter-eggers and a gold-laced wyandotte. The roo is an Ayam Cemani mix - his father was that and his mother was some unknown backyard breed. He's very mellow and we really lucked into getting him. Anyway, we now...
Our coop is 4 x 8 feet with three 12"x12" nest boxes that protrude from the back of the coop. I do not place feed or water in the coop because that attracts mice, and the grackles figured that out almost instantly and would raid the coop for the feed. I have feeders and waterers outside and this...
I have this one from FarmLite. I live in the high desert of Utah and it gets mighty chilly here in the winter. This door works perfectly. I have mine set up on a solar-charged battery system. It is totally care free. The door itself only got stuck once in the closed position when it got really...
Well, things did not go well for my hen. She was a beautiful olive egger but I had to cull her this morning. She showed absolutely no sign of improvement after 12 days of treatment and isolation and this morning her breathing was strained and sounded all gurgled. I know it was probably something...
I guess I should have read some of the posts here before I made one because I see many others have been through this ordeal - most with success so I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and see how long it takes for her to recover.
Edit: Would an epsom salt soak be good for her? Maybe once or...
We have a small flock of 4 hens (started out as six but that's another sad story) and last Saturday night one hurt her leg. I watched the four of them go up the ramp into the coop like any other night. Sunday morning when they came out, one was limping badly. She could barely walk. We realized...
