    eco-friendly sustainable bedding alternatives?

We use hemp mulch. The local garden center has a variety of mulch types that are certified as usable in bio farming with no additives or chemicals. It's about time for us to change out the current mulch and put it on the compost heap.

    Bamboo leaves as food....

We've got a big stand of bamboo (all from one pot of the stuff my husband bought at the garden store). The donkeys LOVE it! and we normally cut a few stalks to use in the garden (for staking tomatoes or other plants), leave it in the donkey yard for a few days to allow the donks to strip off all...

    Bonjour!

And bonjour to you, too. From Ile de France. Tell us about your chickens!

    Hi.

Sounds like you're from "my" side of the Pond. Just for the lurkers, a "hectare" is 10,000 square meters - and a square meter is a bit larger than a square yard. And one hectare is a little less than 2.5 acres. (I still have no concept of how big an acre is - even though I spent my first 42...

    Coop and run-in-progress

One thought for shade and some overhead protection: look for camouflage netting. Hunters use it to hide their duck blinds and such - and I've seen it featured as a "decorative item" for canopies. I found what I needed on Amazon, but if you have a military surplus store nearby, they should have...

Over abundance of eggs! Got any egg recipes?

I've always used 6 eggs to make a quiche (of any sort). Helps if you have a classic "quiche pan" - lower and larger than a US style pie pan. Another option is to make those "Starbucks egg bites." I'm on a forum for one of those fancy electric pressure cooker things and those seem to be all the...

New Chicken Owner! Restored Chicken Coop

Wow! Nice job on restoring the coop! I'm starting to develop coop envy when I see all these lovely walk-in coops. But we're still new to chicken ownership and so far I think our "girls" are doing fine with what we've provided. Like you, there's always a little tweaking to do. (Half the fun, no?)

    These girls baffle me

To be honest, your coop is larger by a darned sight than the coop our next door neighbors have for their 3 chickens. As their flock got larger, they added a second coop, but still a pretty small one. But their white chickens decided they'd rather fly up into the trees at night. When we decided...

    The New Chicken Mamma Here!

Hi! And welcome. I only joined a week or two ago and already I'm far from the "newest" member here. Where are you located? As far as ideas for the Hen Medicine Cabinet, do check out the Articles here on the forum. I seem to recall at least one article that may be exactly what you're looking...

    New ways to preserve eggs?

Quiche freezes pretty well. Search online for all the advice you could ever want about freezing quiche (both before and after cooking it). Freeze it in slices and just let it thaw to have cold quiche for a quick lunch - or reheat it if you prefer.

    ...just BUYING a chicken run?

Oh, we've got Omlet over here in France, too. Was looking at those walk-in runs - but we went with the feelgoodUK one based mainly on price. I figure any pre-fab run is going to have to be reinforced based on local conditions. We're lucky we don't have all that many predators (though I guess...

    ...just BUYING a chicken run?

We're in the process of putting up a pre-fab run - but here in France, there seem to be a number of available options. The one we chose was from a place in the UK https://www.feelgooduk.net/product-category/galvanised-pet-cages-and-runs/ though I bought it through Amazon.fr to simplify the...

    Moderator Appreciation 2019

As a moderator on another (non-chicken) forum and a former moderator of a few now-defunct forums, I very much appreciate the ambiance, and the friendly tone the mods here have maintained. Thank you all for all you do!

    Chips

Oh, we have a number of those bags from various deliveries of building stuff. One of them is currently serving as a cover for our barbecue on the patio! But you're right - they are a cubic meter of whatever, and are normally delivered by a truck with a crane thing to pick them up and plop them...

Will my 12 to 13 week old hens do well with my 3 year old tiger stripe cat?

Cats and chickens do seem to work things out between them. Tweedy (pictured in my avatar) is a neighborhood chicken who "free ranges" up and down the neighborhood. (I.e. she isn't our chicken, though she lays her eggs in our barn and thus feels very much at home in our yard - as well as next...

    sunflower seeds with the shell?

The sunflower seeds you get as bird food are smaller than the striped sunflower seeds and yes, they are chicken crack. Just FYI, Wikipedia has a really interesting article on sunflower seeds that explains the different types.

    Hello from Ireland!

Hi and welcome! I've only been a member here for a week, but I'm far from the newest member any more. This is an active and very friendly community I've found. Also, it's nice to see another donkey person. We're waiting for our first coop to be delivered (in kit form), but our visiting chicken...

    Just waiting for my coop!

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger! There seem to be quite a few of us currently "waiting for the coop" - myself included. The "kit" isn't due to be shipped even for another week or two. Then we'll see how accurate their estimate is of "only 30 minutes to set up." <g> But there is lots to learn...

    Things people say about chickens

The thing about bleaching eggs doesn't surprise me. I never realized (until I came to live here in Europe) that commercially produced eggs in the US are washed, and therefore MUST be refrigerated to prevent them going bad. Always was a surprise to just see cartons of eggs stacked up in the...

Excavation by Birds - A Word of Warning

I'm in the same situation as you are (waiting for delivery of the coop and ultimate securing of chickens) and just marveling at the ways of chickens. Was also thrilled to see someone who has a run similar to what I'm considering (the big "tent" construction, covered with mesh). I'm planning on...
