I let my girls out of their run about 1-3 hours, depending on the weather, before dusk as long as someone is outside with them. I had lost a chicken to a fox attack years ago when I allowed them to free range all day unattended.
My husband found the coop design somewhere and no longer remembers. Sorry. Since this post we have added on a larger run. I think it’s great that your neighbor’s chicken is providing you with eggs!
We just upgraded our covered run to provide our girls with entertainment and exercise.
We added an old wooden ladder, a bench, a swing, a xylophone, a stump and an elevated large branch. I haven’t seen them use the swing or tap on the xylophone yet but they seem to appreciate the other additions.

Yes it is a warmer! ( not a flat screen TV ha!). It is set to come at 19 degrees F. I do feel it is safer than a heat lamp and doesn’t give off unnatural light.
We have a coop cam so I can sit in my living room and watch the hens going in out of their boxes. I thought it was a ridiculous idea when my husband installed it, but we have watched and learned quite a bit about our hens this way. I particularly like watching their nighttime roosting activity...
I have 2 Black Australorps that I am very pleased with. They’re beautiful birds with their incredibly soft black iridescent feathers. They aren’t as friendly as my Orpingtons but they they mind their own business and don’t pick fights with the others. They are a large breed that does better in...
My hens have spent a great deal of time perfecting their nest boxes. I have straw in them but they will pull in wood shavings from the coop and also feathers. They do look rather cozy!
