    Ancona eye crusted shut

Greetings again my water fowl loving friends, Happy New Year to all. So now that the dust has settled and I have time to really ponder my next move I again seek your sage advice. Quick short story, lost first female Ancona to over aggressive males, lost 3 female Runners to the threat from above...

    Ancona eye crusted shut

Get rid of a male Get rid of all of them Get more females I am very confused on what would be best. I love the little buggers, but hate losing them or knowing the ratio is going to be a nightmare yet to happen. The pen is now secured on all 4 sides, no ore hawk threat.

    Ancona eye crusted shut

So, I have a new dilemma: I lost another Runner to a hawk yesterday so now my male to female ratio has me concerned. BTW, Flo's eye is much better, thank you. I started with 3 Ancona and 7 Runners, I drake of each, Now I'm left with both drakes and Flo the Ancona and 3 runner females. 2 to 4...

    Ancona eye crusted shut

Hi, The same, just looks like her eye is closed and she won't open it. I have a friend coming over later so there will be 4 hands to really get a good close look and wash it out. She is normal otherwise, it's weird. Poor kid. Thanks for asking, Anconas are a really pretty breed. The Runners...

I was just thinking about something, if I start to treat Flo with a topical lotion like Terramycin, should we not eat her eggs? Hmmmmm

    Ancona eye crusted shut

Good morning! After getting real close today, washing the outside of her eyelid with warm water, looks like there's no crust, just wee tiny little feathers for a lid. It feels flat, like she has no eye under the lid. I tried to gently probe the lid open, but it appeared as though there was no...

    Ancona eye crusted shut

Thank you all, I will start warm cloth and ointment tomorrow am. Fingers crossed, not sure where I would find a small eye patch if required. She was nervous enough tonight with my inspection so I will leave her be for the cold evening.

    Ancona eye crusted shut

Hello fellow duck owners, I noticed this morning my female Ancona (Florence) has an eye that looks to be scabbed over or crusted shut. At first I thought she lost an eye, at close examination I can't tell if it's gone or just crusted over. She is behaving normal otherwise, swimming, eating...

    Winters coming....

NH, doesn't get ridiculously cold, but will definitely freeze the water feeders. I have electricity in the coop, but keep their water outside. I may try some method of heater, need to visit a local farm and see what they do. Thank you for your kind replies.

    Winters coming....

Greetings all, Learning a whole lot about farming, it's heart breaking, stressful, educational, best thing I ever did!! I've lost my favorite Ancona girl to two oversexed males, waited way too long for eggs, found one today without a shell. Need to research that one, not too concerned. Real...

    Lethargic Female Ancona

I like it, yes, will section off a part of the pen with poultry fence so they can still be side by side, but away from touching one another. Bummer, they were all getting along so well. Thank you

    Lethargic Female Ancona

Thank you for your kind reply, agreed, someone has to be removed. I may try separating the poor girl from the rest of the flock with hopes the drakes will start to share their affection with others. After all, there's 7 others to choose from. Not sure why they honed in on just her and not any of...

    Lethargic Female Ancona

Greetings all, Thanks for the opportunity to get my concern out there in front of the Duck Community. I have 3 Ancona (1 male, 2 female) and 7 Runners (1 male, 6 female). I received them all at 3 days old, they turned 16 weeks a few days ago. They have been raised together from the start, have a...
