What happens when a mate dies

Just lost my female about 2am and one of my drakes just died about 5 minutes ago. I have a drake left and every time I go to the coop he just stares at me and calls for his girl. Breaks my heart!! I’m hoping to get him rehome tomorrow. Fox got into my run somehow, it’s totally enclosed and I...

Chicken staying in nesting box but not laying

I checked tonight and she did not lay nor did 2 of my other hens. I marked an X on the 2 eggs she was laying on even though they weren’t hers and start my countdown. I don’t really want 2 more but shes pretty adamant about this brooding. First year of having chickens so I’m still learning.

Chicken staying in nesting box but not laying

I’m not sure if she stays in the nest all night but I do know the last 2 days as I’ve gone in and out of the run she was in the nesting box. When I moved her today she flattened right back out and low waddled back to the nesting box once I removed the eggs. I noticed she picks up items from...

    It's 13 degrees outside...And I am worried

I would love to have that versus the metal coop I have now!

Chicken staying in nesting box but not laying

I have a pulley that is 9-10 months old that is staying in the nesting box but still laying. She’s been fluffed up and allows me to move her. When I moved her today I noticed she has almost no feathers on her breast. None of my other pullets are acting this way. After reading, I’m thinking that...

    It's 13 degrees outside...And I am worried

why do you not give water at night? I’m just curious. I leave water for mine day or night. Sometimes I notice they are more interested in being outside and scratching than drinking I put it in there in case they didn’t get enough throughout the day. I plan to do a full sweep of the coop this...

    It's 13 degrees outside...And I am worried

I haven’t been out yet this morning, such a bad chicken parent. I’m sure they are fine and with the ground frozen right now I don’t see them wanting to be out much today. It is 16 degrees right now, not sure how much wind is coming off the lake though. I plan to do some work around the run and...

    It's 13 degrees outside...And I am worried

I have a foghorn and it reminds me of a man with a comb over haha. What do you do for your comes and waddles?

    It's 13 degrees outside...And I am worried

Thank you. I didn’t want to put the heat lamp back in but the shivering of my birds has me a bit concerned. One pulley was fluffed laying on her feet and still shivering. They’ve done pretty good up until today. I have them high off the ground with the cords strapped up and secure just in case...

    It's 13 degrees outside...And I am worried

I am glad to know I’m not the only one stressing this first cold winter with my girls. I have 3 ducks, 6 pullets and 2 roosters. I read so much material before getting them but nothing has prepared me for this. I go out everyday and open the coop door giving them the option to stay in or go out...

Condensation in metal shed-using as a coop

I never did mention so thanks for bringing that up! I have 3 ducks and 8 chickens (6 pullets, 2 roosters). I will have to look into the cement board. I planned to keep most of the vents away from the bottom of the floor for now since the ducks are mainly on the floor. I suppose I could put a...

Condensation in metal shed-using as a coop

Well I changed my mind after doin some more digging. I ordered a couple things and I’m hoping this will be enough for the winter. The vent from Lowe’s only lets you order 24 and let’s be honest I don’t need that many. I’m hoping these will work for the winter.

Condensation in metal shed-using as a coop

Most people are advising against heat...I am ordering the vents from Lowe’s I posted earlier and am hoping those will help. I plan to cut the metal to fit those vents and then put the hardware cloth over it on the inside of the shed. The last thing I need is my flock getting wiped out

Condensation in metal shed-using as a coop

I’m thinking of picking some of these up. Putting 2 against the back wall and one or two on each of the side walls. I’m going to take the fan out once that is done. Like I’ve stated before I keep the doors open all day while they are out and the sun does hit inside the majority of the shed...

    Barn Isulation

There isn’t any heat running in my coop. Just trying to get some ideas on how to ventilate it better since Metal is so thin and hard to work with. I have seen people get the heated perches but I’m not going to do that either. I just want to prevent them from getting frostbite and/or sick.

Condensation in metal shed-using as a coop

Definitely worth a try. I’m sure the more ventilation the better, right?

Condensation in metal shed-using as a coop

Those seem really good for the price...I’ve seen threads saying to put vents at the bottom along the floor for air flow. Maybe I could use those vents there?

Condensation in metal shed-using as a coop

I would like to take the sliding doors off and frame it out, eventually putting an automated door of some sort but the ducks have their own enclosure within the shed. It requires someone to go let them out...all works in progress though. I never thought having chickens and ducks could break the...

Condensation in metal shed-using as a coop

I have been reading it since you posted the link! So much information, I think I am going to order the coop window tomorrow. I see a trend that metal is hard to work with so I may take their idea and frame it on the inside and set the window in it. We shall see, definitely good information...

Condensation in metal shed-using as a coop

That’s the same reason we have it in there. It was breaking 92-100 degrees up until about a week ago. I leave it on during the day with the doors wide open to try and circulate all the air. I will keep in mind he’s from Texas and look at his thread.
