    New to Ostrich raising

Any updates here? I'm on my way to check out an ostrich ranch with my wife today, and we may be getting a pair. Eager to hear other people's "startup" experiences!

Ok. Great to know this about drakes.

    Integrating my ducks and chickens

Alright thanks all. The coop is raised about 30” above the ground with a long ramp. I have never seen a duck set foot on the ramp. The oldest chicks go up and down the ramp at will. There is also a 4” high block on the door of the coop. So there are a couple of chicks that love being out...

    Check out my finished coop!

Looks great. What are the rough dimensions?

    Integrating my ducks and chickens

Right. We’ll see about sex - they were straight run, one of the rouens has a pretty distinct neck ring though so i’m guessing drake there. We’ll keep an eye on that as they get older. For now I just want to make sure the chicks survive the next few weeks =)

    Integrating my ducks and chickens

Ok thanks. Yeah they always have a spot to run to, though “the spot to run to” moves around a bit as the ducks go conquer a different territory.

    Integrating my ducks and chickens

(Obligatory duck pic). Here is my coop thread - I’d appreciate any duck expertise there: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/help-me-figure-out-how-to-add-a-duck-housing-to-my-coop.1326518/

    Integrating my ducks and chickens

We just started on this whole backyard poultry thing and our first trip to get chicks landed us with 4 chicks and two ducklings (about a month ago). We pretty separated them at the brooder stage because the ducks were so messy, but loooove them. So entertaining. So I Built a coop/run...

    From tool shed to Coop?

Thanks! And yes, we've got some chicks living in the coop (about a week old), and so the current chilly 75 degrees isn't really working for them. Our 4-week-old pullets are super happy out in the run.

    From tool shed to Coop?

Where did you source the vent fan/controller? Anything clever? I’m thinking I should do something similar to keep my coop tolerably cool in the afternoon. Had to turn the heat lamp on this morning, had some chilly chickens (though everything stayed dry)

    Spooky chicken coop

I get a kick out of the “chicken rave” that goes on on cooler nights and I have the heat lamp on =)

Help me figure out how to add a duck housing to my coop

The intention is to be able to hose the duck goop out to the wood/property (away from the chicken run) pretty readily.

Help me figure out how to add a duck housing to my coop

Alright, so, progress here. I'm leaning toward just adding the duck house as a small "extension" to the chicken structure. Here are some plans in a variety of formats (sketchup (crude)), some overhead view, and a couple photos. It's coming along well! I've actually been just letting the...

More things to do with Black Jack 57?

Cool! How did you apply it, if I may ask @jubgulia

More things to do with Black Jack 57?

No, and it was pretty low-smell when I was applying it in the aforementioned 103 degree heat, enclosed coop, not much of a breeze, and only moderate ventilation (that I was squat-standing in for the duration of application). I have definitely worked MANY things that were much much much more smelly.

More things to do with Black Jack 57?

Yeah basically. Except *THAT* stuff is white, and $90/gallon, and is in the Lowe's paint area. The stuff I got does the same thing, but is $50/5 gallon, and is in the roofing area. It's probably somewhat less pleasant to work with.

More things to do with Black Jack 57?

Yes, almost certainly. Just make sure you ask them to. I didn't think to do that, but wish I had. The exterior paint we bought, we had them mix at the paint station, but I didn't ask them to mix this "roofing material".

More things to do with Black Jack 57?

And for reference, it's somewhat humid, currently 103 degrees out, and the stuff dried HARD like rubber or paint. It took like 7-10 minutes mixing it with a drill-powered bucket-paint-mixer thing though to get it an even consistency.

More things to do with Black Jack 57?

Thanks! Yes it took awhile with the drill-powered stirrer thing to get it all consistent, but seems to have dried super well. I did the floor of the coop and the nest box, and it feels great after a couple hours. I had gotten one of the big utility brushes for spreading things like tar, but...
