    Lash egg or...?

My hens have been laying irregularly since a disruptive months-long crosscountry move. Now that they're settling into a new routine and reestablishing, I've noticed one (likely Victoria) has been laying a few soft-shelled/shell-less eggs. Today I found this bizarre tissue in the laying box...

Half of vaccinated hens dead from Marek's

Hello, In less than four years, we have lost half of our chickens to Marek's Disease (all cases confirmed by necropsies by the lab at UC Davis). Anyone who has dealt with Marek's can attest to how awful this disease is: each case has been unique, confusing, and extremely painful to experience...

    Help! Scabs all over chicken

Closed: My hen eventually passed after 15 days, despite best efforts. After a necropsy, it turned out she did have Marek's Disease, which will make our 5th Marek's loss of our ten total chickens, despite all being vaccinated. Extremely heartbreaking and frustrating. Thanks all.

    Help! Scabs all over chicken

Update: Wounds are healing well, but slowly. The digestive situation still has me extremely concerned. The first couple of days her crop was rock-hard and I had to administer either coconut oil or mineral oil and massage to break it up. She's had green diarrhea and I've fed her a little bread...

    Help! Scabs all over chicken

Yes! I sent all of them to the California lab at UC Davis for an autopsy and it was such a relief to have an answer each time. Thank you. Treating the scabs and they already look better than yesterday. Still having terrible diarrhea but treating the crop and hopefully that keeps improving.

    Help! Scabs all over chicken

Thank you, That's my biggest fear: I lost 4 vaccinated hens to Marek's after a weak vaccine batch and it was brutal. They all had very different symptoms, so I know they can really vary (though none had sores or scabs in my case). I will try that.

    Help! Scabs all over chicken

Thank you. I'm thinking now this may have been a really possibility and the impacted crop could be incidental (or because she was so beat up). I feel terrible, but I'd much rather deal with this than some disease.

    Help! Scabs all over chicken

She occasionally has been pecked on her neck, but I don't know how she would be pecked to this degree, especially on her stomach, especially without any sign of blood. It is possible though, as we are dealing with wildfires so they've spent more time in the coop. She's on the lower half of the...

    Help! Scabs all over chicken

Thanks for your reply. For feed, we use Country Life Organic Chicken Feed from Costco. Treats are a mix of mealworms and scratch, usually Henny Penny or Happy Hens. She has been picked on by other hens in the past (when she and 2 others were first introduced), but I spend a fair amount of...

    Help! Scabs all over chicken

Update: gave her some mineral oil and massaged her crop and it's starting to loosen up, which is promising. Scabs remain horrifying.

    Help! Scabs all over chicken

A few days ago, I noticed our Delaware was losing feathers. She's a few months over a year so I thought she was having an off first molt and didn't notice anything on a cursory check. Yesterday, she was lethargic and drinking a lot of water. Upon checking her, I found horrible dark gray scabs...

Thank you -- that's what I was hoping to hear. She seems very warm.

    HELP! Sudden Feather Loss (PHOTOS)

Hello friends, One of my hens (2 years old) began rapidly losing her feathers 2 days ago and is having watery green poops. None of the other birds appear symptomatic. She went broody about 2 weeks ago and was plucking her front breast feathers. This ended last week. Her behavior otherwise...
