Just, so everyone here is aware. Should the bird test positive for avian flu, the government comes in and culls your entire flock. Without testing them individually. Just thought this might be a worthy foot note, not recommending for, or against anything since everyone's situation is different...
So, I posted earlier a week ago or so regarding losing 12 chickens in a single night to a raccoon attack. Since then we've been keeping our chickens locked in the hen house instead of letting what should be a secure chicken run area stay open, so in the evening we shut them in and in the morning...
Raccoons are easily the number one killer, besides that we have black bears, mountain lion, Bob cats, coyotes, wolves, weasals (rare), snakes will usually only eat eggs, oh red fox, I'm sure I'm missing something, hawks, bald eagle, um, that sums it up I think but raccoons are the worst. Imagine...
I never understood these preferences or this argument in all honesty. I just love chicken. Seems like people enjoy over complicating things or I some how lack the culinary tastes of those arguing, either way, chicken is just damn good. :)
Suffered a Raccoon attack last night, a big one. It had to be a family of raccoons, this time of year conservation is putting out warnings regarding wolves/coyotes teaching their young to hunt, looks like it applies to raccoons as well.
I had 18 full grown chickens and 5 Orpington...
We've done that, well, live trap then let them go at a river a few miles away.
The problem is I live in Ozark County, I couldn't kill all the raccoons out here if I tried. I basically live in Mark Twain Forest LOL. Which, familiar with it or not, it's huge and full of wildlife.
@Summer_ The only real way to get rid of ants is to kill the queen, which is why they sell those ant bait traps. I'm not sure if that would make the ants dangerous to the chickens or not, but it's something to look into.
1st day:
So, I started noticing my eggs would have yolk splatted on top of them, right on top of unbroken eggs, with no shells around. Interesting I thought, and a bit weird. So talking to my mom about it she said it's probably a raccoon. Raccoons are extremely strong and can easily break eggs...
I'm not recommending this, but when I was a kid my dad would have me carry the gas can and we'd go around pouring gas in their ant hills and set them on fire.
I don't think it really ever worked very well and it was extremely dangerous but damn I had fun as a kid hahaha
I'm personally making sure I quarantine any new birds to my flock, I sort of did this anyway, but, just making sure I do quarantine for 30 days as a rule now.
Other than that, business as usual and my chickens live like Spartans. Anyone who is unhealthy or sick gets the chopping block.
Since...
I posted this in my other H5N1 thread I posted for people, but here's the list of flocks the government has killed over this disease. I just skimmed through ones in Missouri where I live, largest was 294K in Missouri.
If someone shows up at your door or calls you on the phone and says "We're the government and we're here to help" don't let them in, hang up on them, and if the issue persists remind them what happened when they tried to raise the tax on tea.
I'm sorry for your loss. How many birds in total?
My current batch of mixed flock chicks i'm raising have black feet with one flesh colored full toe and all kinds of crazy mixtures, so you never know lol
