aww im glad you’ve had so many great feathered companions! chickens really are the best, aren’t they? i love watching my girls dig around, pecking this and that, sunbathing, just generally doing chicken things :)
thank you! good to be back.
she’s actually the less prolific layer out of our two 8 year old buff orps! her sister, Big Blondie, lays far more frequently than her. i thought (and hoped) she’d slow down over the years, but she’s a tank!
hi Geoffrey,
i have been dormant on this forum for 4 years, but i logged in just to reply to you. i absolutely had to rectify this outdated take, as it’s been proven that all vertebrates and even some invertebrates (namely octopuses crabs and lobsters) feel pain. these invertebrates, with their...
thank you so much for reaching out!! i know i’ve been awol but i do appreciate being a part of this community. even though i haven’t interacted in a while, i sometimes will link the community to other chicken-lovers who are looking for help with their own feathery friends, as it’s a treasure...
thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention. This is such a tragic, atrocious side effect of the current sabotage that the USPS is undergoing right now. If there's any actions that we consumers can undertake on our end, even if it's small, like delaying chick orders from hatcheries until...
Last update, and I am sorry for posting so much- it was an oppossum. I came home from work tonight around 12:45 am and found it biting into another chicken, this time my sweet easter egger. It tried to get into the crawlspace again, but was unable to because I had sealed it earlier yesterday. I...
Hello, just updating to all the lovely folks on here that I finally found some closure. Thank you for comforting me through this. I went in to my crawlspace again and searched the entire thing with a fine-toothed comb and found, a just a few feet beyond where I stopped searching the first night...
Thank you for all of your kind words. I am so thankful for this community and for all the advice that you give. I think time will be the only thing that can help me though. I’m still numb and when I wake up tomorrow morning, I know it’ll hit me all over again when she doesn’t run up to greet me.
Thank you, I am thinking about getting a live trap. I need to know what happened. I blame myself too. I keep thinking about how I could have just worked on the coop door harder, or I could have texted a neighbor to put the girls in. She was only 6 months old and so full of life. I don’t even...
Hello all. I am weeping as I type this. I am in disbelief, I keep re-reading the title and going into shock when I realize what just happened. I came home from work tonight and immediately knew something was wrong. I just got a new job that requires me to work late nights, and I had been...
You can try crushing up Tums! You can also try crushing up egg shell for grit. All my chickens ignore oyster shell but will eat egg shell, so you might want to try both. Another thing to watch out for is just signs of illness-is the chicken keeping to herself, are her head and trail droopy, is...
@Wyorp Rock @glassdragonfly thank you for the kind words and commiseration. I will continue to do whatever I can to ensure her comfort. 6 months is just so young to be so sick, especially when she hasn’t even gotten the chance to lay a single egg yet. Life is unfair :(
Hi all, I just wanted to update and say that she still hasn’t eaten much. I did observe her pecking at some weeds but her crop still feels very empty. I hand-fed her a spoonful of yogurt and some coconut oil and a few bites of fig, but I had to force it into her mouth. Once it’s in, she’ll...
Hello! I read your article about crop issues and it was very thorough. Just wanted to thank you for the information! I had one small question- is fluconazole oral tablets ok to give as a substitute for miconazole cream?
@Wyorp Rock thanks, I will treat her with Corid. Our poultry feed is actually in the shape of pellets, which they ignored, so I tried to follow the advice I was given and gave them some mashed up feed but they ignored that too. It seems the only thing they do recognize is grapes!
@so lucky yes that’s actually a really good point. The bare back initially seemed indicative of the treading that a rooster would do, but if she isn’t laying, then would a rooster even be trying to breed her? Perhaps I didn’t try hard enough to insert my finger? There was a lot of pushback from...
@Wyorp Rock thank you so much for all your advice. I will give her the coconut oil. I heard yogurt is also good, I think I’ll try that too. I was initially worried she was egg-bound but she did poop some today so I don’t think that’s the case. You think she hasn’t started laying yet? This is so...
Just tried to check her vent but it was impossible. Her vent was tiny and dry and my finger could only go in maybe 1-2 centimeters, instead of 1-2 inches so I couldn't feel if there was any egg. I'm totally at a loss about what to do.
I think my hen is going through the same situation. I hope your Brahma gets better and she can see her friends, I'm so sorry you're both suffering. Someone suggested to me that my hen might have coccidiosis? Maybe that's it. Also, maybe try reposting this to the "disease, illness, and...
